I've played more than 200 hours of the game and almost all of it on one server. I've tamed or had a hand in taming damn near everything in the game so far all the way up through infernus and frost dragons. In my personal opinion, the only mount I would even consider for combat at the moment would be a dragon, simply because of the terrible issue of wild animals getting stuck inside your mount, server lag causing your beast's hits not registering, and because you can simply do massively more damage than every tame with a ghost scythe or greatsword or even a good spear or hammer. Yetis are underwhelming, though their health pool is nice. Lava tigers look great, but they're really almost identical to the regular deathstalker in statistics. Centaurs are weak as all hell, and cyclops are great for damage against structures, but that's about it. If you are absolutely dead set on getting a land-based mount for battle, I might consider a Bahamut, simply because you can tank a lot of damage and their special attack does decent damage in a resonable AOE.
Edit: didn't read about the stones. Go Cyclops. They're a great alternative until you get them.
Cyclops it is! Any reason you chose them over yeti?
They sometimes clip into the wall, so if you can't find any, grab a panther.
