What the hell ??!! Is this really a good game ?
The title is only an half troll.... I saw excellent reviews about NIER so I decided to buy it. But now I need some hopes to continue playing....

First launch, selcted hard difficulty... the introduction made me nuts until I read about how you should NOT play it on hard because it's a near impossible challenge for a new player to NIER, especially since dodge moves are not explained.... Well, thank you game for explaining to me how to move but not how to dodge....

After some wasted hours of frustration I just read a forum, learn that dodge has no cooldown, downgrade the difficulty to normal and this part was not that hard...

I then switch the difficulty to hard again. And every robot, even the tiniest one, nearly OS me without me seeing anything.... Forum again and I installed FAR. WAYYYYYY better ! Robots still hit very hard but at least I see them so I can dodge. A pure shame you NEED an unofficial fix just to be able to play normally....

I then began to enjoy the game. The first boss was interesting and pretty simple once you understand the patterns, soundtrack is awesome as well as the artistic direction. Combat seems pretty simple but enjoyable. Story seems interesting.

And now I'm at the theme park boss... And frustration again ! Not only did he OS me with every attack (I read forums, seems like I need some chips to be able to play.... Could have been a good thing to explain this to me instead of a cutscene to adjust brightness...), but after a time the camera locks itself and the boss throw waves of balls at me I can absolutely not see, so I spam the dodge button like a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hoping not to be hit (because, you know, each one OS...)... which was never the case on more than 10 attempts.

Pretty tired I decided to switch the difficulty to normal again. First : the lock make a HUGE difference ! Too much of a difference ! No auto targetting in hard is fine, no lock on a game with a camera so lazy is not ! This + the (huge !) damage reduction was enough to allow me to push the boss a little until corpses fall and then.... camera lock again ! Forced to chain cheap mini games as their "hack" attacks are not visible cause of the locked camera..

I eventually died a short while later and stopped. I certainly can down it with one or two more tries but I'm not at all incline to retry for now. I'm frustrated as hell and can not understand all the good reviews I read....

So please, tell me this is not the way all bosses are gonna be, that my camera will not be locked at critical times just so I can randomly die again and again anymore, that I will be able to survive one hit on hard without completly ruining game difficulty playing on normal with some chips and that the story is a masterpiece.... because right now I think this game makes me more frustrated in 5 hours than all the "difficult" games I played theses last years together

Eh, I'm going to have to agree with you on the camera angle in the Amusement Park bossfight. When it zooms out and you have to kill all the androids as well as dodging their hacking attempts, it's just baffling design, since you can't see where the heck they are most of the time. And that's coming from someone who loves this game.

That's really the only fight that does anything like that though. So I wouldn't worry about it happening again.

Just play on Normal.

The developer made hard mode to troll us, not challenge us.

yea the amusement park boss fight sucks didn't like how the camera angle change where you couldn't really see the enemies and where the attacks were coming from

Just to make you feel slightly better, I died 8 times on hard fighting the boss in the amusement park, because after 8th death I lost count. Although I did mamage to beat it in the end at hard by learning from my past mistake.

Might be misremembering something, but androids at that part deal almost no damage at all if I remember it right. It's just kinda obnoxious getting hacked again and again, but it won't get you killed.

I did it literally yesterday on normal mode, and the androids were either doing no damage or so little that it doesn't matter, like say 1 point of damage or thereabouts

That said I enjoyed the fight a lot, though I feel it would be better if the camera in the "top-down" mode was pulled slightly further back so you can see what's happening better.

don't start on hard.
play on normal from lv 1 to 20.

hard is easy.

Starting on Hard is a bad idea. It requires mastery of the game, not just spamming attacks and evades.

And normal is made for arthtritic grand-ma... Bad balance, just as the artificial, unfair and punishing difficulty.

Mind you, I do not condemn the game, it has a welcome feeling of "come suffer more"... and I will finish it (on normal !) before telling if I find it good or not. But god it is frustrating even though I'm a big fan of difficult - but fair ! - games as you could see taking a look at my library

the game allows you to reach lv 60 during the 1st run, without grinding.
the most powerful enemy is much weaker.
fun game, terrible balance.

How the hell do you reach level 60 during the first run without grinding? That's not true.

You needed someone to tell you this? If the game is too hard, lower the difficulty. That's what a difficulty setting is for. lol You won't miss anything by playing on normal (or even easy). There are no achievements or endings or any other rewards for playing on a harder difficulty. The setting is only there so that you can adjust the difficulty according to your liking.

Dude I think you misunderstand something. I do not play for achievement or alternate ending nobody cares (or, at least, should care) about. I play for fun, for enjoyment.
It happens that I find enjoyment through some difficulty... Yes, SOME ! Not impossible, absurd challenge with the game using every possible trick to ruin it, including some unfair, incredible lame methods like locking camera during a fight so you can not see ennemies attack....

I do not judge the overall game yet, but the balance is a mess I rarely have seen through 30 years of intense video gaming. And that is a fact, like the hard mode of the game was made to be frustrating (which is an awfull way of creating difficulty).

I do not doubt it is possible to finish the game on hard difficulty. But hey, it's possible to finish mario with a blindfold ! But how would you, as a normal player, react if all ennemies were invisible and holes were no different from ground ?

I should say a way too easy game tends to annoy me... and NIER on normal is just like that : you can take a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of hits, in case you want to take your time you just have to keep pressing two buttons, run in circle and you're good. On hard you don't even have a camera lock and every hit one shot you.... don't you think there's a lot of space between the two to create a difficulty mode ?

The game has its qualities, no denying of that, but it IS frustrating in more than one way... and not good ones...
