PC vs PS4 Pro Help
Been wanting this game for awhile, and I think I'm ready to buy it. Problem is I don't know what platform to buy it on.

I have a ps4 pro hooked up to a 4k tv, but read the max resolution is only 1080p? I guess that's fine if it maintains high fps. I'm worried about ps4 not being able to hold high frame rate during action though.

I have a good PC hooked up to a 1440p monitor. 1080ti, i7-7700k, 32gb ram. Usually no problems running games unless they are poorly optimized or badly ported. Which is what I'm worried about. I read that PC port is hit or miss for some people even with good PCs. I also read somewhere that a third party patch is required for running the game optimally. I really don't like the sound of that, probably a deal breaker for me honestly.

My questions are

How well does the game run on PC without any third party patches?

How is the resolution scaling? For example, is it one of those games that's not worth playing at a resolution that it wasn't designed for?

Does PC version support ps4 controller, or does it require another third party app to map the inputs?

Does ps4 pro run smooth and is it graphically comparable? I can handle small dips in frame rate but not constant stuttering.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

I run the game using FAR mod at 1080p and high settings and I get around 50-60 FPS most of the time with a GTX 960 and FX 6300 (turning Global Illumination to Low using the mod), so I'm reaaaally sure you won't have a single problem even at 1440p. I don't know how it runs without third party patches, with your PC it should run at 60 FPS stable, but you'll need the FAR mod to play on 1080p and higher resolutions, unless you like rescaled 900p.

It fully supports the PS4 controller, however there are people who said it didn't work for them. There's a solution for that tho (and no, it's not a third party app)

About the PS4 Pro version, I don't know since I have never played it on that platform, but I heard that it runs really smooth and looks pretty much the same.

I hope that helped you, and sorry if I wrote something wrong, english isn't my main language

Despite its reputation, NieR:Automata is generally a somewhat good PC port coming from a Japanese developer. It might not be the best, but it is far above a lot of other releases (looking at Nioh), it is just that it suffers from some minor oversights that harms the port more than it should.

1. Eh... doable. The game have an output issue though in fullscreen mode that is only fixed by either playing in window mode (no native support for borderless) or using the community mod FAR. FAR is highly recommended.

2. The game isn’t going to win any graphics contests anytime soon, but like all other games it benefits from a higher resolution and sharper models etc.

3. Steam have built-in support for the DualShock 4 controller. Enable “PlayStation 4 Controller Support” in Steam to be able to use DS4 controllers as XInput controllers in pretty much all games you run through Steam. For DS4 button prompts, a mod exists that provides those.

4. The PS4 Pro runs 1920x1080 55~60 FPS with constant dips or stuttering here and there. Your PC is capable of running it at a 2560x1440 rocksteady 60 FPS (although minor 25ms spikes might occur when entering a new area). Hell, your PC might even be capable of running it in 4K at a variable refresh rate between 50-60 FPS, with minor spikes to 45 FPS at times.

The PC port’s main issue after the fullscreen issue is the display driver resets that can randomly occur, but makes the game almost completely unplayable on some cards (primarily GTX 780 (Ti)). That issue usually occurs less than 5 times in a 50 hours playthrough for a player without one of the most affected cards. Your 1080 Ti is not one of those most affected by it. The workaround to that issue is to save frequently so if it occurs you only loss minor story progression. If you’re already in a save zone when it occurs then you can still hit Escape, Enter, Enter, to quick save the game.

Judging from all discussion when the game was first released on Steam, it appears that PS4 is the better way to go. Just less problems in general

That was before FAR really existed and all semi-modern AMD cards could not play the game due to display driver bugs that affected it.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Plenty of videos showing PS4 Pro running and it holds steady 60fps for the most part. A few dips to 50+ fps. Even fighting holds 60fps... It dips in strange places like certain map areas (early on but disappear as you progress), and certain other scenes that seem less intense than other times when it is solid 60fps.

All in all it seems like it is the superior experience. Without unofficial add-ons. Go PS4 Pro.

Thanks for the help guys. That was some detailed information. I'm still a bit undecided but now I have some good information to dwell on.

I just wish Sony had as good of a refund policy as steam does. Because I'd like to buy it there first and see how it runs. If it wasn't right, then I could just refund, get on PC and deal with a community patch that appears to be a solid fix for resolution issues.

Suppose I could watch youtube videos, but that never looks or feels the same as physically playing the game.

Nier was originally made for PS4. Honestly i dont think getting Nier or one or the other really matters. If I owned a PS4 I'd play Nier on the PS4 rather than on PC since there are more hiccups on the PC.

Even with your PC specs, you could still get issues with it. W/ PC you're prone to bugs/glitches, FPS issues etc which would require the FAR mod to resolve it. Heck, just a few days ago I lost over 100 hours of gameplay since a bug or glitch made my save file unreadable....

I've got it for PS4 and PC (because the PC version still doesn't work for me [GTX Titan, 16GB RAM, i7-3770]).
All I can tell you is, that the PS4 and PC version looks almost alike (without messing with any third party tools), and that if you have bad luck, such as me, you will have to do a lot of self fixing for the game to work on pc. As I stated above... it still wont work for me, after some time (10-30 min) I'm experiencing a Whitescreen.

I would recommend the PS4 Version.

^- First gen Titan, I presume? Those sadly use the same architecture as the 780 (Ti) cards which explains your issues...

I really dislike that Nvidia up and “fixed” the issue without actually fixing anything.

Exactly...
I was still hoping that it will work, after they announced that they will look into it, but meh...
Allthough I am going to upgrade my PC soon, I still think its bs that I can play Wolfenstein 2, Destiny 2, etc. on at least high quality, while Nier is giving me the finger^^

That's why, to be sure, I always recommend the PS4 version... You'll have absolutely no problems

It runs great on PS4 Pro.

Watch this for an in-depth look at PS4 Pro performance...
