New Players: Essentials / FAQ
Essential Improvements
These are the essential improvements that all players benefit from.
  • Use Kaldaien's FAR mod. It fixes the fullscreen issue, cutscene stuttering as well as a bunch of other issues with the game and generally provides a better experience regardless of your build.

    • Lower global illumination to High to get a performance boost and more stable framerate without any major visual impact. Low-end builds can lower the setting even further. See comparisons[diff.pics] for the visual difference.

  • Disable the 'Anti-Aliasing' setting as that one is extremely demanding on most hardware.

    • Ambient Occlusion includes a separate post-processing anti-aliasing pass (SMAA) which is much less demanding, so enable that one instead if you want to minimize the jaggies.
    • Don't enable AA and AO simultaneously, as that introduced LOD popping.

FAQ
  • Q: What is most recommended of using a Controller or Keyboard+Mouse?
A: A controller is recommended. The game is playable using keyboard and mouse, but a lot don't like it, however certain measures can be used to provide a better experience.

  • Q: What is FAR and why is it so essential?
A: FAR (Fix Automata Resolution) is a community mod created by Kaldaien with contributions from a bunch of talented individuals. This mod is essential to fix certain issues the game have but also contributes with visual improvements and smoother frame rates. My tweak guide have a whole chapter (same title as the question) which goes more into detail.

  • Q: Is the port any good?
A: It's slightly below OK-ish? (PC ports from Japanese developers...) It's nothing to phone home about, but it isn't the end-all of ports. The issues it does have can mostly be worked around, albeit the lack of proper engine support to recover from display driver crashes (the "white screen" issue) affects a few GPUs (mostly 780/780 Ti, RX 480) up to the point of unplayability. Both of these cards have gotten driver patches from Nvidia/AMD respectively but results may vary.

None the less, there's no question that Square Enix/Platinum Games should really have worked on the port for at least a week or two more. Their overall treatment of the PC port leaves a lot to be desired.

  • Q: Have the PC version received any patches?
A: Yes, a single culmination patch was released 2017-04-28. This patch brought all platforms up to date with the various quest/progression fixes that had been released, and also included preparations for the upcoming DLC. This patch did not, however, come with any fixes to PC-specific issues. At all. Development have since halted on all platforms.

  • Q: I am on the fence regarding buying the game...
A: Buy the game but keep the refund limit of Steam in mind (2 hour played time/2 weeks within purchase, whatever passes first). Most issues are noticeable during the tutorial area alone (first ~45 minutes of the game) and generally speaking if you don't experience any major issues in that section then you won't for the rest of the game.

  • Q: Fullscreen mode is blurry/weird/not correct?
A: That is the "fullscreen issue" that affects practically all players. Use Kaldaien's FAR mod to solve it.

  • Q: Why is everything so pixelated?
A: It's primarily caused by low resolution for effects like AO, bloom, and god rays. Use Kaldaien's FAR mod to override the resolution for AO and bloom. See comparisons[diff.pics] for the visual difference.

There's no way to override the resolution of god rays as of this moment.

  • Q: Cutscenes seem to stutter or something?
A: Use Kaldaien's FAR mod to solve it. If that doesn't work, or you want motion interpolated 60 FPS cutscenes, use Vidsquish to reencode the cutscenes (saves HDD space as well, though takes at least a couple of hours to finish).

  • Q: My game crashed and I can only see a white/frozen image!
A: That is the "white screen issue" that affects some players. There's no end-all solution, but you might be able to lower the chance of it happening. Please refer to the "The White Screen Issue" chapter of my tweak guide for more information.

  • Q: The game runs horribly and sees massive frame drops!
A: Ensure that you've disabled the 'Anti-Aliasing' option of the game entirely (set it to None). Then use Kaldaien's FAR mod to lower the global illumination levels a bit. That should solve most performance drops.

If you still experience low performance, please refer to the "Maximize Framerates on Low-End Builds " chapter of my tweak guide for more information.

So i have to disable AO and leave on AA at least x2? for better perfomance and less world popping?

No, disable AA and leave AO enabled. :)

The "Anti-Aliasing" option in the game is actually pure MSAA, which is highly demanding.

The "Ambient Occlusion" option in the game includes regular AA, but also SMAA, a really fast anti-aliasing technique.

Don't ask me why they don't mention this, just another thing with the port ^^

The otherway round - the AA is more taxing than AO

i don't wanna see jaggy grass and popping world having the AO on the and the AA off the world pops stops but the grass is just awkward so i prefer have the AO on and AA x2 and sacrifice 10 fps

That's fine, the point is to make you at least aware of the consequences :)

I want this thread stickied. I hate it when outdated old threads sees activity and pushes this down. >_<
