as for why ... i've always liked the crazier stuff, they were much more fun to tweak & paint.
Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn.
...They all inevitably die at this point if that wasn't the end of the scenario, but such is the lot of gropos in Ogre.
I enjoy any and all GEV units for their manueverability. Heavy/Missile tank combo just for being good. Light tanks for making effective anti-GEV screens. I tend to find the SHVY to overcosted for what it can accomplish in most situations.
One of my favorite unofficial 'conventional' units is the experimental Spitze Cybertank-Destroyer. Being an absolutely stupid 10/10 gun on a D1 M1 move-or-shoot platform. It can only go out to range 6 unless it combiens its attack with a spotter, uses the laser LOS rules for shooting, and costs either 2.5 or 3 Armor units. its potential uses are extremely limited, I just find the idea of a giant ♥♥♥♥♥♥ railgun in the vein of WWII era railway cannons to be incredibly amusing.
I've really been gung-ho about collecting all the units from articles and old fansites and trying to create a comprehensive catalogue of them. Some of these have stat typos or need to be revisted for other reasons, but I've even got a custom low-res counter sheet. (made of bits of other ones from around the net and some custom pixel work)

In "Raid" type scenarios, as the attacker, I'll take a mix of GEVs and LGEVs. Again, if I have to choose, I'd go with the LGEVs because they pro-offer two targets and let you hit more objectives simultaneously. As the Defender, I'll take a mix of HVY and LT tanks. (HVYs to lurk in and around forests, LTs to fill in the gaps between (or lurk in towns to dash out and try to snap up an unwary GEV that wanders too close.) Again, if I have to choose, I'll go with HVYs only. NOTE: if the area to be defended has choke points that are created by terrain that's very unfriendly to GEVs, then I might opt for HWZs screened by INF. But only if the area is narrow enough that the HWZs can cover ALL the approaches, otherwise it's just a waste of time if the enemy can quickly get around your defensive line without being fired upon.
Good point about terrain being a slightly limiting factor for GEVs - otherwise they'd be far and away my favourite unit. Heavy Tanks all-terrain capabilities make it very useful, and at a good price too! :)
This is a key element of why the game has persisted for so long; all the units are well-balanced. There is no single unit that overpowers everything; you have to use a balanced mix of units or the flaws of that unit will kill you.
Yup, it's amazingly well balanced! Didn't 1st edition have GEV moving more on 2nd move making them too powerful?
