If I go through the game playing only the main-quest, keep my inventory to the bare minimum, will I be fine?
I don't care about sidequests and such, I just want to finish the game.
I did buy the franchise pack, so I have all the DLC.
Do I still have to avoid opening chests even if I do as above?
Also, what do you mean by "level gear"?
The only way is avoid opening chest in dlc unless they are legendary(there are 3 from chest and 1 one the 3 is chest is invisible. You have to destroy all the fire hydrant to activate it) and or in the main campaign if you haven't open all the chest. Since I do not know if this is your first run or NG+, just rush through the game into NG+. Another method is to transfer all your important gears to a new file and start all over again with the same method, but that would be your last resort. Technically they will stay with you for the entire both run throughs, then you will just have to make space for their stored memories and one is avoid opening chest. ps. Selling potions will free up a little bit space.
If you're new to the game, make sure you study the items first. Maybe look up Google/Youtube guides and walkthroughs.
Your goals would be:
-Do the side quest since they give you valuable exp and some side quest gives you skill points.
-Look for all the stonebites and relics as they raise your character stats permanently.
-"level gears" are armors that grants more experience, every armor piece in this game will show their stats and you want the ones that have "experience %"
Yes avoid any chest that does not consist of area map or key, and if you're not sure you can always save first then open. But Generally the chest that contain the area map and key look larger and is ornate color with horns on each side.
And you will see some weapons glowing and floating around as you progress through the game, take them if you like but they will take up space. All of these floating weapons are just legendary rarity.
