Can anyone explain why this increases vehicle traction?
Among the forums ( ) I found this picture: and from the author the upside down suspension with wheels that rub onto the blocks, that are top of them improves hill climbing capabilities, but why?

I wanted to test it for myself, so I made this:
And to my surprise the vehicle was capable of climbing steeper hills and I assume if I make more of these, it would be able to climb even steeper ones. But why? Is that a bug, a mechanic or feature, an oversight of the developers?

I did some more testing and I can climb about 50° steep hills now with this:
That hillside on the background of the image is where I am testing the vehicle, it has no issues driving it up even from a stand still. It's slow while climbing, but drivable.

It introduced one problem though, if you get out of the vehicle, it starts to roll backwards since there is no hand break feature in the game.

More wheels means more traction. the addidional wheels on top are adding drive power to the ones on the ground. Still means squat when you fall in a pit or just flip over. These things are like ♥♥♥♥♥s.. They spend most of their time on their back.

Ok some professional hints from a professional german car manufacturer :P

- when you build the wheels, always place suspension and wheel frame first BOTH. If you finish the suspension first and the wheel after the wheel hangs down and blocks movement sometimes. This is essential for the upper pair of wheels !

- after you load your savegame the upper wheels will hang down. That means after each game loading you have to deconstruct/ construct the upper wheels

- when your car is neither steering nor moving although you constructed/connected everything in the right way deconstruct the driver cabin and construct it new. This will fix the bug.

- NEVER build a beacon directly on the suspension. In the moment you enter the driver cabin you will be shot into space with your car, losing your car, your inventory and your upgrades

- build the driver cabin quite high, so you have a better view over the country and detect death pits more early

Beside that, the brand new TT TRACTION TRUCK works fine as mobile base. Fine traction and also decent hill climbing capabilities.

What's a traction truck? Is it the default now? I can only see one set of wheels etc in the build window.

At that time this build was the only way to climb hills, dont know how the game is today as i am waiting for the anti-hole-update on 17th of August.

I like that this game makes you pay attention to what the vehicle is (or isn't) doing with regard to traction. One thing I've observed is that many times my wheels were not all making contact when climbing irregular terrain. I now use (3) levels of suspension per wheel so that my wheels have a better opportunity to flex with the terrain and touch the ground instead of being perched in mid-air at times.

The wheels are the engines for these vehicles. That is why people have discovered that more wheels equal better climbing ability.
