I don't know if this is possible, but you could set up a virtual joystick called "xbox controller" with the following axis assignments ...
Pitch: Axis 2
Yaw : Axis 4
Roll: Axis 1
Thrust + : Axis 10
Thrust - : Axis 9
Vertical : Axis 5.
And the following button assignments...
A : Button 0
B : Button 1
X : Button 2
Y : Button 3
LeftShoulder: Button 4
RightShoulder: Button 5
StickLeft: Button 8
StickRight: Button 9
Note: the controller needs to have "xbox" in its name, otherwise it will not be detected.
Hope this helps.
Can anybody confirm, that the game can be controlled w a joystick, or HOTAS? Even using the above method....thx.
But the best would be to have (back?) in-game HOTAS support (buttons and axis assignments) please.
Thanks.
Worse: in fact, even with the xbox one controller provided with the Oculus Rift, I could not control the ship after taking off. My other USB controllers (hotas, rudder pedals, etc.) keep sending axis inputs that are seen by DS2 and send the ship rolling and pitching to hell. I had that problem in other games not designed for hotas like hawx.
Conclusion: Native HOTAS support is dearly needed (besides the remaining bugs to be fixed especially in the UI). If you want to do free fligh, you'll have to use the xbox one pad AND unplug all your other usb controllers :-((((((
X360CE worked with at least one other game (Aircar) so it's not just me or my computer.
Please add HOTAS support !!!
This method works:

Just make sure you download the vjoy installer.exe, not the SDK.

Sweet!!!
Dear developer(s), do you intend to correct the remaining bugs in this game ?
- Only two Controllers (e.a. Throttle and Stick) Controllers are possible to assign. No pedals. Or no Throttle. Or no Stick...
- Axis of WH Stick not detected. Tried several times.
For Simulation Junkies like me this would be a gamechanger. Unless the graphics are wonderful and i love to explanations while i explore our Solar system, without a serios HOTAS & Pedals support it remains a game in between to me.
