Telling ship names?

I just started playing U-boat, I play on hardcore difficulty since I watched some tutorials before, long story short, I got a bounty hunting mission to sink a freighter called "Woodrow Wilson" When I arrived at the convoy I managed to identify the ships using the booklet but I that's all I know, Is there a way to tell ship name by looking at them with the periscope, or do I have to guess, or is there some information about the target? (like freighter type or country)

Edit: I found out that on lower difficulties, the officer manning the periscopes will identify the ships name but that's not happening here

The names are usually written on each side of the bow's ship hull. You just have to get close to identify them via periscope.

If you don't mind cheesing it you could also select any ship in view range and get a close-up when you click the camera button on the ships info panel.

Yep, not only the name is written on the ships but the AI will also discover it if close enough.

The problem is ai will only identify minor details from far away, doing things manually is better. for example, your crew detects smoke, but you can clearly see in manual mode from the uzo that there are 2 destroyers

Ship names near the bow can be visually identified within 2.5km.
