G'day everyone!

How to get help

**You will not receive technical support here on the Steam forums.**

If you are having technical issues or just generally want developers to see your post, please head on over the Unknown Worlds Forums[]. You can find the Technical Support forum here.[] Just be sure to read this first.[]

What!? WHY WONT YOU HELP ME HERE!? Well, we understand many players would prefer to talk to us here on the Steam forums, but we are a very small team (There are only nine of us in San Francisco) with a small volunteer playtest/tech support group. We do not have the bandwidth to maintain an active presence on both our own (very active) forums and here on Steam. If we spread ourselves too thin, you won't get the decent response and help we want you to have.

You can also draw issues to our attention very quickly via @NS2 and @UWEDev on Twitter. Most of the team is on Twitter, for example Brian (Lead Programmer), Max (Technical Director), Dushan (Engine Programmer), Simon (Sound Designer), Charlie (Game Director) and myself. While we often won't respond directly (We get too many messages to be able to talk with everyone all the time!) We do read what you send us.

We're sorry we don't have the capacity to cover the Steam forums in more detail. But we think you will prefer us talking to you directly on our forums, rather than having PR/Marketing 'Community Managers' or otherwise give you canned responses here on Steam.

Where to go to find out about updates

Natural Selection 2 has been updated 27 times since launch (As of Sept 10, 2013). That' an average of more than a build every two weeks! NS2 versions are identified by 'Build Numbers' - The current one at the time of writing is 255.

You can read all about the performance improvements, bug fixes, game-play tweaks, fixes and features that go into each build on the Natural Selection 2 blog[]. Each build receives a detailed news-post, and you can also see news about build in the in-game news section of the main menu.

Common Issues

For the most up to date information, always go to the Unknown Worlds forums.

  • Out-of-Memory Crashes[]

  • Always use D3D9 FULLSCREEN over D3D11, as the latter is in 'beta' form and not as reliable. The same goes for the Linux version of NS2

  • Disable Ambient Occlusion to mitigate input lag.

no. i am not going to register 500 accounts , like 1-2 accounts per game to report obvious bugs.

"Out-of-Memory Crashes

Disable Ambient Occlusion to mitigate input lag. At present, enabling and then disabling mouse acceleration, and then enabling raw mouse input (in that order) may further mitigate input lag."

except there is no directx on linux.
Windows users have been hit with a LOT of issues since they basically rewrote their engine to facilitate support for Linux.
This message was directed towards those primary users because obviously Linux does not have DirectX.....

NS2 was originally written for Windows based OS to start with, they have had to do a lot over the months to prepare and get it working in Linux, they are also working on Mac support as well but Linux is the first stepping stone towards that.

As they mentioned, they are a small team, if you want to help them help you, report your issues on their site.
Else if you are happy to wait in limbo for a special treatment response, best of luck!

OpenGL works on windows as well. Even in some case much better than DX as well. There was some controversie in the past because microsoft deliberately made opengl work slower than directx on their OS. So it beats me why the OpenGL drivers have to work like crap. I just bought a new videocard for this game because it came out on linux and yes i used to play it on my family windows box, so i am more of less one of their 'primary user base'. So i have opengl 4.3 at disposal which means all the graphics features should work smooth. Besides i have a feeling its not just a RAM problem but also a VRAM problem. Memory fragmmentation shouldnt be a problem but since they are using LUA this might be a PITA to fix.

Yeah, OpenGL has been available on MS OS's for years, I was more referencing the towards the fact that they specifically say use DX, which as we know, cannot be used in Linux natively.. and as NS2 was originally built for a Windows environment, I referred to those users as the 'primary user base' as they were.... regardless.

They actually explained one of the major issues they are dealing with here to do with the 32bit users which is memory fragmentation.

With the major changes made, a lot of the work they did towards optimizations has pretty much been undone, and in time(hopefully not long) they can fix all of our issues, but yeah the more constructive feedback they can get on their forums, the better equipped they will be to fix the issues sooner.
can you help i have big lettering and its ruwining my experince
no every think is big so i cant see help
Im having trouble with the screen resolution for my copy of the game. It was normal when i first installed it then let the game optimize and now everything is way out of prportion. I was hopping the previous updates fixed it but no luck. I cant even change it manually because i cant read anything in the menus any help avalible?
Also having issues, everything looks fine but my mouse is selecting menu options that I'm not rolling over. Found that pressing alt+ enter twice canges the resolution and fixes it

Yeah its more of eveything is blown up about 3x normal
i tried open gl, and there was a slight difference in performance. tried the D3D11 beta option out of curiosity and my screen went black. i can hear the title music, my cursor still moves, but the game is non responsive. there is zero visual response, so reseting is not an option, as far as i can tell. i uninstalled and reinstalled. it seems as if the option was saved as default even after the new installation. trying the reinstall once more. if this should fail, any suggestion as to what i should try next? all suggestions are appreciated.
