Love the game hate the people that play it.....
When I first started playing this game.....I thought it was great. Now I'm to the point I have to force myself to play it. I play on ROOKIE servers only because I'm a rookie at this game. Unfortunately it seems alot of impatient, loud mouthed jackasses tend to play on rookie servers too. "OMG you've been playing for 17 seconds and havent taken over half the map yet" WTF......."OH NO OUR COMMANDER DOESNT KNOW WHAT HE's DOING EJECT HIM". "OH this is the worst team ever we've been playing for 3 minutes we might as well concede" I've played ALOT of multiplayer games and I have never seen such a large concentration of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ playing a game in my life. If your really good at this game.....and with respect alot of people I've played with seem to be.......WHY IN THE HELL ARE YOU ON A ROOKIE SERVER???? I know its not "rookie only" but don't get pissed and be a ♥♥♥♥ because some people don't know the name of every map room off the top of their head after only playing a few hours.

I don't know what servers you play on but it's rare I come across people like that. Most I've encountered have been nice and helpful, dunno what to tell ya.
To be fair there have been some decient guys that have been helpful and cool but maybe 1 out of 10 i jump into.
Why rookie servers? Because they have people.

While I think the attitude of the average crowd has worsened since the BETA days, I also think you have had bad luck or might be a little exagerating. NS2 community is still the best I've ever encountered.

The thing is: alot of seasoned players do play on ROOKIE servers since there aren't enough regular servers. I play 8v8 exclusively and sometimes I'm having a hard time finding a 8v8 server with decent ping, so I jump in a ROOKIE server.
The part you MIGHT be exagerating is that alot of experienced players know when the game is over (for example when you loose your fast second hive early game) alot earlier than the new players. Hence they will call a vote concede, because playing a downhill battle right from the start is not fun for anyone.

Now, it's easy to take offence by that, but my advise to a future comm is: don't let negative comments bother you. If you get insulted, try to stay calm and explain that you are new and want to try things out. Ask what they think you did wrong. This is all much easier with a mic ofc, so if you don't already own one and like the game, I suggest you get one ASAP.

Anytime you jump into the chair as an unexperienced comm, be sure to tell everyone that you are. I'm sure you will get at least one or two ppl advising you what to do instead of calling you names. Try it and tell me how it went.

To be absolutely fair, the OP is completely right.
I've clocked over 370 hours in NS2 so far and in all my years of playing various FPS and RTS games online, I've never seen such an impatient and generally rude community.
Regularly, games go quite pleasantly. But there are one or two... or sometimes a dedicated group of people who seem to deliberately make life difficult for everyone else. They are loud, belligerent and carry on like immature brats.

As stated by example, they will complain that you dont have 'X' upgrade yet, despite the fact your Commander has acquired 80% of the map and is working towards the upgrade anyway. Or they incessantly spam Ammo and Medkit requests when standing near an armory, or doing it on purpose when they know they wont receive it, such as being Marines and locked down to 1 res node.

I understand there are rookies and such who might make such mistakes, but no, there are people who deliberately carry on and troll to no end for the explicit purpose of frustrating the commander and others.

Sometimes, no one will go into the Com chair. Thus the team falls behind. Eventually, someone or I will, and then they start complaining that we dont have this or that yet. Or they whinge that the commander is doing such a bad job. Perhaps they should have jumped in the chair then?

For me, its immensely frustrating when people complain that we dont have a certain upgrade, when I quite literally told them ten seconds prior that it is currently researching. Or that I will get it when the 2nd or 3rd hive or com chair is up.

A lot... and I mean a ~LOT~ of people have become lazy and unmotivated with the addition of the Concede feature too. I've seen games where, with 3 Marine bases and Com-chairs, the team mass conceded at the sight of the first enemy Onos. Or they give up 3 minutes into a match when we still have more than a chance to push back out without any major loss apart from an extractor or two.

As a final point, yes, people need to stop hating on Rookies on Rookie friendly servers. Its the whole point they exist. Everyone, from the most inexperienced new player to the hardcore tournament veteran... was new at some point.

Remember that. You had to learn, and were new too, once.
Give those commanders and new players the space they need and the leniency to learn and acquaint themselves with this complex game.

Mhh, I'm really sorry for the bad experiences you have had, even over the course of 370h!
I just can't share your resentments. There is a game every now and then with the described rudeness, but they are few and far between. As I said, most ppl I've played with were polite and welcoming.

Out of respect for experienced players.....and i agree the concede needs to be removed......we don't learn if we give up......and i have been in more than 1 game where we were pinned in our base and turned it around......right about the time exos were researched

I have had my fair share of jerks.

I'm new too, 14 hours in and haven't encountered anyone like that. I find there's a lot of helpful people willing to teach you thing, i.e. how to command.

I agree. You do seem unlucky though, so you'd probably be better of playing on dedicated community non-rookie servers.

A lot of angry nerds play this game. You shouldn't let it get to you when they start whining about your less-than-flawless play.

So true, the small tight knit community is being destroyed as the game evolves and becomes more main-stream.
OK question ......do you need a complete copy of the game to run a dedicated server? I've got the bandwidth and will just set up a rookie only server.
