Play through the tutorial before going comm in a public game and play on green servers till you get a bit of a feel for the gameplay.

Practice makes progress.
Look at the map and learn the names of rooms.
Stick with your team.

1. Don't jump in the comm chair prematurely. Not so much because there are players out there, who will get mad at a rookie comm, but due to it not being fun at all till you know all the dos and don'ts. Spend some hours on the field and see how other commanders do their work. You will get the hang of what to do and when to do it. And then spend some time in sandbox mode learing what all those buildings do and how they work together. Just then think about giving the comm chair a try. But inform your team about your lack of experience with it. Maybe there is a descent comm, who want to take the chair. Maybe he even gives you the chair and guides you. Just don't jump in and don't talk to your team at all.

2. This isn't your normal gun-ho fps. Prepare to die a lot and don't get frustrated by it. It's part of the learning process we all have gone through. This game is very unforgiving. Try to always stick with at least one teammate, who seems to have some experience and learn from what he does. Just don't go out there on your own till you're confident enough, that you can handle yourself.

3. Communication is the key to success. Either buy yourself a mic or use the chat often, to tell your team, where their backup is needed. Or just use it to ask questions, if you don't know something. Don't be shy. Many veterans out there will help you with pleasure, when you point out, that you are new and willing to learn. Just ignore the scumbags, who will rage at you. They tend to forget, they where at this point, too.

4. Look up some up-to-date tutorial videos. Even older ones might help to learn the basics. But the game mechanics are changed with every other update. So be sure, to know the actual tweaks.

5. Don't lose your patients. As said before. This game needs a lot of practice, but it will reward you with an awesome gaming experience. Just ignore the trolls and rage-kids and stick to the nice players.

6. In every spare moment during gameplay, press C to check your map. Learn the names of the rooms, see where is the trouble and your help might me needed. The map is your best friend. Don't ignore it.

Look for servers that run NS2c (basically NS1 mod for NS2) the only good thing about this game sadly....other than that dont expect much from this dying game :(

Wow.. plaster your obnoxious oppinions somewhere else man.. jeez.

there are very high skill caps in this game, it's really up to you to become good, Some helful resources are the wiki :
You can learn all about both sides, basic gameplay mechanics, skill driven plays and strategies here.
A page with useful lingo and general terms you'll be hearing when you play, so you know what's what.

This is also quite a heavy mic-usage game, since it really helps being mobile and going somewhere calling out help or whatever, rather than standing still and then wait for people to respond.
Other than that i recommend getting familiar with the pace of the game, which is fast.
Listen to other players, and the commander.
Hold C to open your map and memorize some of the places, know where you need to go to if the commander calls out that something is being attacked.

If you really want to command i recommend taking in some of the game first, before you try, knowing what you're missing while playing yourself and apply it to how you will command. but take it slow, getting into the game takes some time.

A simple tip:
When you see an enemy, pretend the ground is lava and jump like Hell.

As a marine remember that the best 3 res you can spend is on a welder.

Hello Noc and welcome to the NS2 community.

If you want to an overview check out super effective´s channel. He gives tips for the game

There also a lot of really great tutorials for all the other life forms on steam and youtube.
I would highly suggest to check them out. Just be aware that some are outdatet!
Check the time the video was posted just in case.

Another video I would highly recommend to you is the one from the "NS University":

It expains how you should play as marine and gives you some really useful tips to start out.

If you happen to die with your higher lifeforms (Lerk/Fade/Onos), it is sometimes really hard to go the same lifeform again. Therefore, I would recommend to try out the Combat mod which can be filtered in your ingame server browser. As the name suggest, it focuses on combat and allows you to go Lerk; Fade, Onos again and again once you have the points for it.
This is a great and fun way to improve your skill as any alien you wish.

My personal advice for you is to start out as a field player and not to start out as commander.
Watch how other commanders command and try to learn from them. As a field player you will see which impact the commander has on the game and will give an idea what you want to give the players.

Another thing I would recommend is to ignore the kill/death ratio. Try to think in ressources.
Here an example:
Let´s say you finished the game with 0 kills and 5 deaths but killed 2 extractors.
The kill death ratio would suggest that you are bad but you are not.
In fact you have killed 2 Extracors which cost 20 ressources and have destroyed 2 ressources producing buildings. You made a huge impact on the game!

If you feel lost just listen to the commander. Ask for an order. If he gives you one and you
try to accomplish one you did well. Ah, and the map key (default c) is your friend.
Check it out every possible time you are out of combat.

If you encounter idiots who are getting on your nerves, feel free to mute them. To do so click
left mouse button and select the audio symbol on the left side of the person´s name.

It is really hard to start out with this game. I hope you will get trough the hard "rookie times"
and hope you enjoy the game to your fullest.

I am sorry if I misspelled something and/or phrased some things oddly.
English is not my first language.

  • When you see an enemy only use A and D. W and S are for special occasions.
  • Be at least 10m from your friend when going together
  • Always buy a welder
  • Only shoot when you can hit
  • YouTube skulk jumping

    and finally
  • Don't be too hard on yourself if you do bad. It happened to everyone.

Remember, the floor is metaphorically lava.

And in some cases...literally lava:

Regarding introductory Youtube videos I recommend looking at this guys channel "NS2HD". He isn't such a good player. ;) But his gameplay videos taught me a lot, when I first started with this game, so I didn't have to feel like a complete dunce. And they are entertaining, too. :)

Now that I think of it, I never thanked you for that, Hugh.
