That usually causes non-linux PC's to not run the game at all.
I've played this game for some time now, and i've had no problems with any mod so far. It's a possibility, but i doubt the mods cause your computer to act like it did.
For the orange screen, there is an in-game mechanic for the alien team to go into that vision, it's turned on when you press F.
I hope this solves your problem, you don't have to tweak any files or re-install anything. there is no solution to your mod problem, until now i've seen only one server without mods. But the mod you download is usually the Shine administration mod, and that counts for almost every server, so once that's downloaded you won't have to update on any new mods for a while.
I would also like to mention my card DOES support OpenGL and I play OpenGL games all the time, but it for some reason doesn't like it on this game.
Nor is it really good for your FPS if you can use DirectX 9 or 11.
Here's a fix FOR THE BLACK SCREEN I found that may help, PLEASE FOLLOW IT IN ORDER, AND REINSTALL DIRECTX EVEN IF YOU HAVE IT:
1) Run dxsetup in drive\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2\redist\directx\
2) Delete the folder drive\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Natural Selection 2\ns2\shaders
3) Press the Windows key and R (Win+R) and type %APPDATA%\Natural Selection 2 then press enter.
4) Delete all the files in this folder
5) Verify the Integrity of the NS2 Game Cache:
In Steam, go to the Natural Selection 2 menu option, Right-click>Properties>Local Files>Verify Integrity of Cache
(this will re-download the files you deleted, but it will be the correct files this time)
6) It should say when it's complete, boot up the game.
Optional
7) Right click the NS2 exe and set it for Admin Rights.
If that doesn't fix it, please post your Computer Setup, OS with Bit-version, Graphics Card, RAM, etc.
Thanks for the help, But sadly I found what the problem was and it wasn't the game. Turns out the heatsink in my video card was completely defective and burned out the GPU.
Luckily I have a spare video card to use while I get this one replaced.
But thanks for posting this, I'll use it in future reference.
