160fps to 15fps every 5 seconds

anyone else have this problem? i've searched forums, tried workarounds, and modified my videocard settings to the lowest settings and highest performance boosting settings.

Anyone else have a miracle fix for this problem? The game is unplayable, nearly everytime I see an enemy, I shoot back down to 10-15fps.

Maybe you got a program regularly writing things on you HDD (like a monitoring one that creates a log file every 10 secs). Try to disable the "create logs" options.
If it's not that, try to launch NS2 with only steam. Nothing non-essential.
When you say you get drops everytime you see an enemy, do you mean when an enemy appears on your screen you get drops? Does your fps also drop when you see friendlies?

start_progs set to 0 in my registry. im getting a little bit more frame than i did before, but im still going from 180fps back to 20fps

I started getting this in the last couple of days as well. Trying to figure out what is happening or what changed on my system. r_stats doesn't show any conclusive.

Maybe you can defragment your HDD, remove unwanted software? That could have a medium impact

no spyware/viruses and also defrag daily at 4am. im still unsure what is causing this. CPU does not exceed 40% while running ns2

done this, and even in "realtime". still the same thing, starting to think i need to replace my RAM and/or HDD.

Don't jump to the conclusion that your HDD or RAM is the bottleneck of your computer. What are your specs? Can you monitor CPU/GPU/HDD while playing? (that would indicate what's slowing everything down)

AMD phenom II 6x2.7ghz
3272mb RAM (3.19gb)
nvidia 560 ti

will monitor performance to find out where it hangs at next session.

Lets see, while in game, I am using about 65% RAM, average of 0% HDD, and 25-40% CPU. Tried every known graphics configuration possible, all lowest settings/vsync off, texture streaming off/on, still doing the same thing, infact, i think it's getting worse...

Ive tried dx9 and dx11, dx9 seems to give me a bit more fps.
