The game has a learning curve, you should probably read a guide or watch a video if you want to learn, each role has things you need to know. Also you should observe the people you are playing with, the small community means that you will usually be with at least a few people who know what they are doing. Ask them questions. The best general tips I have: Check your map overlay constantly (C is the default key). Listen to your commander, and communicate with your team.
Edit: I almost forgot, don't jump in the command chair/hive until you have an understanding of the game. If you don't know what players need you can't effectively command them. Also don't shoot/bite the first enemy in sight if your teammates are sneaking around(ctrl as marines, shift as skulk to walk slower and silently).
The updates are now being made by the community, but yes, it is still being updated. In the US it is easy to find a few full servers, I can't speak for anywhere else.

Lets say you play a skulk for the first time it's very difficult to find the ways how to get maximum speed and the best way to move around the map when youre playing against more experienced players.
You can just hop in a green server and have fun but you know you really need to watch a video how to play the classes and then practise it some with empty server, if you have never played a a game that has such things as movement speed acceleration you cant ever figure it out by yourself.
Hope this helps.
If you want to learn this game you should stick with one thing and try to improve that:
1. So in the beginning you know you will die a lot, so for example only use the rifle and stick with itand gift your pres to someone by buying them a sg If you feel frustrated, do a normal round inbetween where you can buy everything as a way to relax.
2. As aliens stick also with one lifeform which you practice. 1st rule so you can actually practice: Don´t die. With that I mean to play carefully and if you feel threatened just leave to heal up at the hive. Furthermore, many new players are sticking with gorges which is a fun lifeform to play but I would recommend you to play Skulk, Lerk or Fade so you learn how they play like. If you focus on skulk you can also later on go onos and train that.
3. Play on a daily basis for around 1 hour instead of two days for two hours. If you have a friend meet with him on a combat server and do 1 vs. 1.
4. If you can record your gameplay footage and watch it. It reveals bad habits.
5. Combat servers are one of the best ways to learn lifeforms since you can die as them and just re-lerk, fade etc.
If you want to improve effeciently you need a plan and you have to stick to it. Ask better players for advice and tell them how you train. If you waste time doing sth. they might notice and call it out.
P.S.
I know this sounds like a pain in the ass to do but if you feel frustrated because you do not perform in the game, this will help you improve and lessen that frustration.

ok. i've been already doing this but yeah instead of switching to see if i am more comfortable with a new weapon and just losing it i will stay with whatever until i get good with it. my main problem however is just the aliens and i like them cause they are different. however. i hate them because they are different. i like the playstyle of lerk but im still geting use to mouse and keyboard and my god that alone is a learning curve all on its own. but yes thank you for the advice
Note that each lifeform is a counter to a marine tool / weapon, and each marine weapon/tool is a counter to an alien lifeform.
Combat will also become a standalone game soon, and it's better than the current combat mode given the few videos that are out.
