I don't think you need to find anything to get out of the ship like a key or book but I could be remebering wrong sorry.
You don't really need to find anything on the ship (though there is stuff to find. I also can't recall if it used a Vanilla Ship in that location. I don't think I made it up there in the early days.
In every tavern it will default the first rumour to Helgen. You still don't have to go there, but it will update your quest to point to Helgen if that's what you are looking for.
I don't do that start too much anymore, Frostfall will tear you apart that far north and in that water (though I think it might provide some snowberry stuff to make it). I never did Beths Survival mode so not sure how that plays out.
You just swim your way out.
As with all starts using ASLAL your quest log will say something like “begin your new life” until you speak to an innkeeper about rumors and they tell you about Helgen.
Alternatively, just getting close to Helgen will trigger Alduin flying away and give you the objective of investigating and finding the Adventurer’s Journal which then tells you to either go straight to Riverwood to warn someone or explore the cave to find and rescue Hadvar or Ralof. From there, the main quest continues as normal.
