Elemental resitances and weaknesses
I think something like this can go a long way in the form of diversifying and adding depth to combat. It doesn't necessarily have to be elements, but some form of rock, paper, scissors.

For the sake of an example, say only 3 elements existed, Fire, water, Earth. I could assign enemies to be of a certain type, while assigning player spells and powers either elements or none for a basic attack.

Enemies of a weaker opposing element would take enchanced damage, while a stronger opposing element would resist damage. I assume it would be hard to apply this system in such a way that player AI would actively know to use certain types against the right opponent, bus even without that, it would add some variety to how fast a monster is downed based on the luck of using the right skill.
