Turning off prop placement during terrain painting

Is there a way to turn off the automatic prop placement when painting terrain? Especially because trees are gigantic and make it impossible to do detailed painting; I remember this not always being the case, I believe. Am I just unable to find some settings?

I usually just make every area Plains. With Mountains and Chasm as options if i need them. Everything else is placed manually/by brush rather than relying on the terrain types.
