When did MM6 need the uplay thingy?

I bought this game when it came out a long time ago, but I dont remember having to sign in to Uplay to play it. Is this a new thing? If so, I'd like my money back for any game that I now have to log in another site just to play. Well lesson learned I wont buy any more games from that publisher.
