Dust
Besides the obvious factory type buildings, how do you identify dust creators?

I noticed dust on my oxygen storage tanks, not sure what's causing it as they're near nothing except pipes of course.

The planet causes it

You get dust passivly on everthing. Extractors only accelerate the accumimilation.

Anybody knows how they accelerate? It is a planetwide or range dpendant?

All extractors say "Near by" but doesn't indicate how far. I assume Dust Storms and Dust Devils may also contribute but haven't looked into it to confirm but would make logical sense.

The range is a couple of hexes bigger than the area it shows for the working area. You can test it yourself by building an extractor and then putting something cheap like oxygen tanks near it. You'll soon the the difference on the things inside and outside the range of effect

Unless you're using your oxygen/water storage tanks, it's best to just turn them off to avoid the maintainance until you need them. Just fill the tanks and turn them off if not being used at the moment.

Turning things off doesn't stop them needing maintenance

Yes, to fix the dust problem you need to colonize a different planet. Unfortunately right now only Mars is included in the game. Also the title of the game is 'Surviving Mars' so I don't know if they plan to add other planets in the future.

(I wrote this as a joke, if I am making fun of anyone here it is myself. Hopefully it did not look like I meant anything else by it).

While this is technically true, turning things off does save on the cost to maintain and time expenditure of the drone doing the maintenance in some cases. Let's say you have a building that needs maintenance every 10 sols. If you turn it off, in 10 sols it will need maintenance but the maintenance won't be done because it's off. Let's then say you don't need to turn it on for another 20 sols. By keeping it off you would have saved the resource expense and the drone time to repair twice.

Dust storms and dust devils accelerate dust accumulation for sure.

Mines, concrete extractors, supply ship landing areas and shuttles (probably) all kick up dust as well.

Dust appears to be 6 hexes from center of extractor so 7th hex is safe. So drop extractor. drop a 5 hex wire (takes one metal) now you can drop a solar panel and the panel will not get the extra dust, just normal enviromental dust.

The only drawback to this of course is if you forget to turn it on early enough into a disaster (for exampel dust storm shutting down moxies) for it to actually recieve maintanence and start working in time to need it. Once the maintanence bar fills up and the building officially breaks even the storage tanks & batteries won't give you their contents until repairted.

Its the main reason I gave up on that tactic. Kept forgetting about it until my domes start screaming for water, oxygen, & power... and if its power then its extremely hard to get things back online.

Easier to deal with maintanence until you get the Triboelectric Scrubber tower which blows dust (aka resets maintanence bar) off everything in its range. If you overlap 2 of them they will even reset the maintanence on eachother pretty much making everything in their coverage area maintanence free... it even works on in-dome buildings within reach (Like an Electronics Factory) though I am not sure how its described function of blowing dust off those helps lol :P

And now with this patch it appears to be 7 hexes from center of extractor so 8th hex is safe.....:P

i believe its usually within the range of the bubble around the extractor
