Have you tried the 2cm Flakvierling 38 with the same results?
A quarter of my infantry and half of my tanks are killed/detracked before I reach the first major entrenchment line, and I simply don't have enough ass to tank the lines. Mortars are pretty effective, but I can only bring one mortar truck if I'm using three SPAAG's to defend against the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ juggernaut that is the squadron of IL-2's.
Super frustrating, I'd overlook ALL of this if not for the ridiculous load times and slow frame-rate, which are both inexcusable and due to poor coding rather than system limitations.
I used 3 snipers to spot most of my targets (2 in a command unit and 1 separate sniper).
Used the right flank for the main attack.
ToW is not a game in which you want to rush. I don't think of it as an action game.
Real battles take lots of consideration as well, and lot's of concentrated firepower. (so don't use just 1 mortar unit, use 2 or 3 etc. untill you know the enemy is thined out enough).
B.t.w. tanks are bad "scouts" in ToW. Unless we are talking about Tigers etc...
There is a way to give yourself more units,

About the support. The enemy air attacks or artillery support are skripted in the campaign missions. They dont need to take any points.
