Stereo separation too strong with 3D dual sided 180° videos
Hi !

Thanks for this great software. I just got a problem with the 3D fisheyed 180° videos :

Everything seems too close, and / or the stereo separation is too big.

I have tested another player, BadoInkVR (yes I know it's a porn player :) ) and with this one the videos are perfect, and the stereo separation is perfect.

I have tried to play with the settings, the radius and the stereo settings, but without real success.

Any idea ?

Thanks a lot

Hi

Thanks for liking Whirligig. Regarding the stereo separation for 180 fisheye. The player default is 0 separation. What this should mean is the projection of the fisheye onto the half hemisphere is dictated by the footage itself. The left side of the image being mapped fully onto the projection surface and being sent to the left and the same for the right. Whirligig has an option that allows you to adjust the mapping of the left and right portion by shifting the divide off which should either make the video feel more in the positive or the negative space. This option is under the settings tab (the cog on the UI or f2 on the keyboard). Adjusting this slider can help with video that feels too close.

I'm not sure why the BadoInkVR player should show different results. It's possible that their fisheye is differently mapped and is more in line with the footage you're looking at, or maybe the place you are positioned within the sphere is pushed back. Either way I wouldn't be able to tell for sure without checking it out.

I'll have a look at the player you mentioned and see if they are doing anything different that could explain the different results. If you could let me know the footage that you are playing back that would be helpful as well (is it the videos from the BadoInkVR site?)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll let you know if I find any conclusions.

All the best and happy new year

Phil
Hi !

Thanks a lot for your answer. I have played with the stereo seperation without great success.

With the BadoInkVR player, everything seems a bit farther.

The videos I was playing were not from their website, but I guess you can check them with their player and yours to see the difference :)

Thanks again for your assistance and let me know once you have tried their player.
Hello !

I have tried again and did manage to find a good setting playing with radius and stereo separation.
And for some videos in fact the trick was to switch the left and the right eye.

Thanks for your help !

Thanks for letting me know. There are so many formats out there and so many ways to project videos it can be quite difficult to work out the best playback for each video :)
I've had less success this way. Samsung VR (formerly milk vr) for the gear vr plays a video I have in both its fisheye and spherical modes and they dont appear to have as strong a 3d effect as I get with whirligig. In WG the character is so close to the screen that I cant focus no matter what the settings but on SVR in both modes they're ok, (Sperical gives the better result imo). Perhaps there are different ways to do fisheye calculations?

Hi

I'll put this on my list to research. There are many reasons that the videos might look different. One is being in the centre of the video. In my fisheye you are right in the centre where as the SVR might have you positions further back. I'm not totally sure really. You could try moving back with 'a' on the keyboard or you could also try reducing the FOV from 180 to 150 which will should make it smaller as well.

Thanks for the feedback. Hopefully I can recreate it and if so I'll look at ways in which to recreate the same effect or give better instructions on how to get the same results. If you have examples of footage that it's very evident with that I could test that would be useful but if not that's ok.

All the best

Phil
