Just make them optional, the players choice. If one wants them enable and disabled by default.

If you remember, you had to release the Guidebot to use him in the game. What if you choose to release the Guidebot you also get the Thief-Bot? Makes you think about it.

This is why he was locked in a cage in Descent 2, the player could find and release him if they wanted, otherwise he remained locked up.

Heh, it varied by level in Descent 2. Sometimes there was a trigger that released the theif bot, such as entering an area were there's a power up, finding a secret, or gaining a key, he could be placed openly to wander at the beginning, presenting an immediate threat.

As someone who built a number of Descent 2 maps, multiplayer and single, there a lot of "trigger" options available in the old games that can be used quite creatively to introduce the theif when one least expects. Shooting out a seemingly random light or destroying a wall panel could have effects such as releasing hidden bots, or hidden goodies, wouldn't surprise me if the devs kept some of their old tricks. In fact i would love it if they did.

can they use guidebot from descent without permission?

You cannot patent game mechanics, they may not be able to call it "guidebot" or use the original 3-d model. But nothing prevents them from useing the concept and overall idea.

revival prod can ask parallax for permission to use guidebot

Revival Productions essentially *is* Parallax.

Why isn’t Parallax the developer for this game?
Parallax Software’s relationship with Interplay is, shall we say, complex. Revival Productions was started so there’d be a clean slate to develop Overload.

They own pretty much all of the Descent assets and sounds. The only thing they really don't have is the Descent name.

They don't own the Pyro-GX ship design and name (player ship in descent series), they sold that to someone else some years ago.

Oh thank you for making sure this is specified because I'm sure someone would've asked.

Sad... but true, The Pyro-GX assets are owned by a private citizen, last i heard the individual was unwilling to part with them for any developer.

Still an amazing design to this day.

"with Deep Silver owning the remaining properties, such as the original "Pyro GX" ship and music"
Revival Productions  [developer] Mar 21, 2017 @ 7:28am
Parallax Software owns the Pyro-Gx likeness and name. We haven't sold any of our copyrighted material in any of the Descents. Interplay owns most of the sound and music as that was created by their employees. Parallax owns almost all other copyrighted material. Interplay owns the Descent trademark.

We could put the Pyro-GX, Guide-Bot or Thief-Bot models in Overload, but don't plan to. We'll obviously have a player ship and are mulling over the other two.

Remember guys, in Descent 3, you had the Guidebot stored in your ship, that you could poop out at a moments notice and tell it to go back into your ship when not needed. IF there is a guide-bot, I'd love to be able to do this just like in Descent 3.

I have just 2 requests if we get a D3-style Guide-Bot:

When he re-enters the ship, do *NOT* cause damage to the ship. That's very annoying.

When he re-enters the ship, he should go to sleep and it should be easy to forget that he even exists. One annoyance I have with him in D3 is, he makes noise even after I tell him to get back in the ship. The order for him to get back in the ship should be more like, "I don't need you right now, so get back in the ship and go to sleep until I need you again".
