Crash solutions

If you're still experiencing that the game crashes on loading screens, try giving the game a bit more time to load. Especially if you're entering one of the largest scenes like Ribe or Eoforwic for the first time. Windows may even give you a pop-up that the game has stopped responding, but try just telling it to wait a little longer. The scenes should load a little faster on subsequent loads.

Before you do anything else, it may be worthwhile to:

Verify your files

Before you try anything fancy, make sure Steam has downloaded and installed the game correctly. To do this, right-click the game in your Library and select "Properties". Go to the tab called "Local Files" and click the last button, labelled "Verify Integrity of Game Files..."

Update your video drivers

If your game files verify successfully, your next step should be to ensure that your video drivers are up-to-date. I know it sounds like a canned support response, but several players have reported that updating their drivers solved the crashes they were experiencing. Updating your video drivers is fast and easy, and you should keep them up to date anyway, so you might as well save yourself a lot of potential trouble by trying that out before you proceed to the following suggestions.

Disabling reflection probes

If the game crashes on loading screens during the camping timelapse, try disabling the reflection probes. After version 1.0.5, there is now an option for this in the Video settings so you don't have to mess with your config file. Without reflection probes, the lighting in the scene will not look quite as natural as it does with the probes enabled, but it's better than crashes.

Video crash bypass

If your game has been crashing immediately after character creation or immediately upon opening, try adding the following anywhere in your config file:

[VideoPlaybackSettings]
DoPlayVideos=False

The side effect is that you will not get any videos. This is mainly a problem for the end of the game, since the denoument will not play.

Last resort

If you've tried these solutions and you're still experiencing crashes, first check the game's minimum recommended specifications on the store page against your own computer to verify that your hardware meets the game's requirements. If it doesn't, you should contact Steam and ask for a refund as soon as possible.

This solved the problem of entering the camp. But now i do get a crash during the night, at the start of stage 2 of camping. Maybe you can look into that? I tried all things mentioned here.

Hello Greenbeal, that's fairly dismaying to hear, as we were under the impression that the camping crash was due to the reflection probes. Can you send us your crash dump please?

i turned the graphics all the way down and finally made it through my first night i am going to try on diffrent settings see if i can pin point when it stops working

I am experiencing a similar "crash". Rather than the game actually crashing, it'll sit in the loading screen for an obscenely long time any time I try and enter a camp after leaving Ribe. After the loading screen, it ends up on a little video of my hirdmen standing around the campsite doing nothing, with no menu. I can't press escape, I can't do anything anymore in the game, and to get out of it, I have to Alt+F4 or open taskmanager. I've sunk about two days worth of progress into that save, and would hate to have to start over on it.

I've tried the reflection probes fix, it doesn't work. I've not tried verifying my files or updating my drivers as both of those cause other issues on my computer on regular occasions, and I'm not crashing due to videos or anything. My computer's specs well exceed the game's minimum, and probably the reccomended as well. As I've said, there's no true crash, though it may as well be one, but because of this there isn't a crashlog I don't think.

Hello Halo, I really would like you to try verifying your files and updating your video drivers, just to rule out those causes, but other than that if you could send your latest .sav file and the folder with the corresponding name to [e-mail] we will take a look at it ASAP.

I've been getting infinite loading when I try enter Eofowic. I've been in there before and loaded in just fine but no longer appear able to get in. I've tried verifying files/fresh installation, updated drivers & turning off the ReflectionProbes. No joy I'm afraid.

Hello True Primarch, looks like it's time for the Last Resort - please email us your crash dump.

I suspect your crash is a bug in the specific Unity version we used for the game, which we've found and solved for version 1.0.5, and which was happening on certain configurations during load screens. Your crash dump will help us to verify that your crash is due to that same issue.

[Jonas] been havng real troule tryng to ext the longhouse at start of game goes on to a loading screen then crashes have tried everythng suggested nothng seems to fix it.

Hello djohn, does your computer meet the minimum specs? A crash that early usually happens if you're trying to play it on a videocard that doesn't support DirectX 10. Please check the specs listed on our store page and compare it to your own hardware :)

If you find that your videocard does not meet the specifications, you should probably ask for a refund.

Non of the above works for me, and the game crashes after every instance,1st after char creation, great hall, open door to first fight, after first fight, after fight on island returning to village, try to check on my inventory. 80min game play 4 crashes, fixing 2 hrs.

I also encounter a series problem. First of all i have to say that i have finished thw game twice without encoutering crushes. From then the game crushed three consecutive times when i tried to enter Perth after finishing the mission in the ravine. I tried to reload the game from a previous save with no avail.

Have you updated your anti-virus or something recently? Try whitelisting the game with your anti-virus.
