Getting Started with Mods
Introduction
At launch, some of the game's files are protected against modification. This is intended as a defence against cheating, mostly during online play but also when setting lap times or earning achievements. When the modification of a protected file has been detected the game will disable online access, achievements and also saving.

However, we understand that many mods are made with absolutely no intent of inconveniencing other people. People want to play the game in their own way, but currently it will not save their progress if they modify a protected file. To assist these players we have added some basic support to the game for using modified data so that, when enabled via the method described below, the game will save their progress. This save is separate to the one used by the unmodified game.

Questions & Answers

How do I enable mod support?
Support is enabled via a configuration file that is passed to the game when launched. The configuration file is a simple XML file that lists one or more directories, each containing a mod. It should look something like this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

<ModList>
<Mod Path=".\My Mod 1" />
<Mod Path="c:\Some Mods\My Mod 2" />
<Mod Path="e:\Some More Mods\My Mod 3" />
</ModList>

To launch the game:

  • Right-click "GRID 2" in the Steam library
  • Select "Properties"
  • Click "Set Launch Options"
  • Insert "-mod " followed by the path to your configuration file, e.g. -mod "c:\GRID 2
  • Mods\configuration.xml"
  • Click "Ok"
  • Run the game

Note: Remove this launch option if you wish to run the game normally.

When the game tries to load a file it will search through the directories in the order they are listed. If it finds the file it is looking for it will load it, otherwise it will use the original file. NB: If the same file is present in multiple mods then the game will load the first one it finds. This may cause compatibility issues between different mods.

How do I set up a mod?
Start with an empty directory, then take the files from your mod and lay them out in the same directory structure that the game uses. Don't forget to add the path to the directory to the configuration file as described above.

Can I replace any file with my mod?
No. Modification of certain files is not supported by this system. These are:

  • raceload.jpk
  • dr.nic

...plus any files in the following directories:

  • system
  • download

The game will ignore any instances of these files in a mod.

What about DLC cars or tracks?
The DLC packages are stored in the "download" directory mentioned above. You may not modify them. However, it is possible to override the files stored within the packages provided you own the package in question.

For example, if you own the IndyCar pack and want to replace any of the files for the Dallara IndyCar you would add them to a "cars/models/ind" directory within your mod as if it were one of the normal cars.

Here are the codes used by the game to identify the currently available DLC cars:

  • 240
  • 370
  • 722
  • cam
  • civ
  • evx
  • gtr
  • ind
  • mpg
  • r32
  • rx2
  • wrx

I've made a mod using this method but it still won't save my progress. What's going on?
Did you previously modify any of the files in the game's installation directory? If you modified one of the protected files then saving will still be disabled. Be sure to restore GRID 2 to its default state before running the game. Verify the integrity of your game cache before trying again.

blonded. Aug 27, 2013 @ 6:42am
it'll be nice, if modders make a "free cam"mod, so people could make videos and screenshots.

Why did you permanently disable saving for mods? It worked totally fine with a basic camera mod, and you updated the game, and removed my ability to do it. I completely deleted and re-downloaded the entire game. I didn't touch a single file in the game folder, and I followed the modding instructions exactly. The game absolutely will not load my save with just simple cars/models/camera mods installed using the modding launch command.

This is such ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t! I can't play the game anymore how I used to very recently. I'm 100% fine with no online when modded as it was before, but now I can't save or load my save file in any way.
