Turns out that the controller does work just like the Xbox 360 controller. The problem was that I had both plugged in at the same time, I suppose that was causing some sort of conflict. When I unplugged the 360 controller the Xbox One controller works flawlessly
One quick edit after a bit of playing: Sometimes the vibration will keep going when it's not supposed to, like the pause screen and the menus. Quick fix is just unplug the controller and plug it back in, maybe the devs can patch this easy when the roll out the Steamworks patch
I had the same problem, try going to options>controls>choose preset> keyboard. then restarting the game. After that i could use my controller and keyboard.
