"Mid/Low-Tier" base location?
I'm looking at moving out of the river area to somewhere closer to iron but not all the way north to the snowy areas. I'm curious where others move to. Do you move east to the jungle or west to the far side of the unnamed city? Somewhere else? I've gotten myself equipped with steel weaponry, so I can take on most scrub enemies (skeletons are still troublesome).

Near summoning place, between swagger rock and summoning place. You have short distance to Black galleon, The den, sinner cave and summoning place and have access of rhinos and elephants for thick leather in swagger rock.
And near the river you have iron and coal.

If you have free choice, I recommend building by what I call the "Crocodile river" (the next river north from Noob river) and near Tower of Bats. (F5) The mountains west of tower of bats have one of, if not the, biggest deposits of iron ore in Exiled lands. The river offers water and plant fiber, and there are tons of crocodiles and hyenas around the river to get leather and tar out of.

Other alternative could be moving near the Shattered springs (Alkali lake) where there are huge deposits of Brimstone which you will need in abundance in the future.

Thanks for the suggestions! I probably will either move onto the plateau near Supermeru or somewhere around the Tower of Bats. I was leaning toward the latter anyway.

I'm surprised more people don't go towards the Jungle. Yes, it's a fair way to the right, but I prefer it for mid game as it has everything you need -

Plenty of Iron nodes, Gorillas and those man/monkey things are mobile pinatas for hide/thick hide/fur.

Birds for Eggs (for making Exotic Feast) feathers and hide.

Spiders, Crocs, and Snakes for Chitin, Silk, Serpent hide and Ichor, heaps of "camps" for making "friends".

And access to the Black Keep and Volcano through The Passage.

I just can't get past the gloom, personally.

I like building up by Priest-King's Retreat, easy access to a lot of places and resources, and a pretty area being a crossroads for the desert/savannah/north. Sadly the siege of al-MyProcesses makes the area chug hard and not a great place to build.

Very true, and the constant rain can be a PITA.

But you don't have to go all the way into the Jungle. You can go a little more west onto the grasslands (such as Foal Island or south of Xalthar's Refuge)

The 'Sink Hole' or 'Shattered Springs' are good places. Both have Obelisks, so return travel to base is easy (especially if you are dragging a captive). Also both are wide and flat so easy to build on.
'Mounds of the Dead' also has an Obelisk but that may be too far North for your liking. Good armour, weapons, and tools can be harvested from the Cimmerians around there but cunning is the answer up there. A good bow/arrow set can be used to draw the NPC's to you, one at a time. Makes them easy to pick off.
I know you said not to go north, but on the base map, starting at level zero, I make a mad dash to the dragonmouth area. There are tons of resources and not much else happening besides a couple of angry elk. Centrally located to the 3 best areas for thralls, which you can start snagging early if you are careful. Or picking them off and looting better weapons and armor early. It's all doable in early stages, and you level up rapidly.

I appreciate everybody's input! I enjoy this game but damn you don't get much direction from the base game.
Tervuren Oct 9, 2024 @ 7:30pm
Which is something I very much enjoyed about the game when I started playing.

It was me, a world, and mine to succeed or fail.
