Blocking forced Redshell spyware leads to crash | Blockieren von Schnüffeldienst führt zu Absturz
[05.08 11:25:11] ConanSandbox.exe *64 - api.redshell.io:443 open
[05.08 11:25:16] ConanSandbox.exe *64 - dl.conanexiles.com:80 open
[05.08 11:25:22] ConanSandbox.exe - dl.conanexiles.com:80 close, 158 bytes sent, 1700 bytes (1.66 KB) received, lifetime 00:05

Some background connections for Conan Exiles which are activated every session
dl.conanexiles is for patchnotes...other stuff is not so nice.

Blocked Redshell spyware leads game to instant crash during the Unreal engine advertising video.
Redshell is an "service" for Marketing attribution & Steam tracking for PC games
Wasn't active before release.

Everyone can test it. Add "0.0.0.0 api.redshell.io" to hosts and start the game.

So far some more

Other integrated stuff is more crap as useful, even for singleplayer. One half tracking/spy/profiling/advertising stuff, other half is DRM plague and rest is unnecessary.

Beside this ascpect, Funcom EULA is invalid and they have no right to legitimize anything.

The game was thus deleted directly and will be removed from the library if nothing changes asap.

Customers are no cheap ressource or self-service store. Learn it >.<

--

You can use your hosts file to block most of those connections. Even redshell now is impossible via this method, because your game will crash during the unreal video at the beginning. So one tracker is still active every time you start this game without a chance to block this.

Only important is to reactivate Denuvo adresses from time to time, because it's necassary for every game which is using this Drm system... or leave that untouched

Beside this and Patchnotes and maybe the game website (depends on personal preferences) ...else is nothing needed to run this game and can be blocked without functional restrictions.

I'm more worried about the doubleclick.net connection - why does the game connect to a server for advertisement company? Are there ads in the game now? Is my in-game behaviour tracked and sold to advertisement companies? There is no mention of any of this in the EULA.
ペンギン May 8, 2018 @ 7:03am
Doubleclick & Google Analytics (both products belong to the same company = Google) and CrazyEGG (clicktracker) will be applied when opening the ingame help (active user action). Via Menu and accordingly outsourced. Rest is passive active. Redshell during the game initialisation...

I deleted the game for now, but i suspect i have to check one point again, will add information here ... download will take a while...

And if sold or not... noone would tell this a customer and mostly justified by "developmental purposes" ;] It's only based on trust and one-sided! But anyone who even thinks a bit, know with which companies like these earn their money or why else we need coupling contracts for games and why it's common to integrate hidden stuff without an optional user choice?

A german review is also out.

Now we have few options:
  • Funcom delete all unnecessary stuff
  • Funcom change the algorhytm and hide their analytics directly in their sourcecode (like Ubisoft does so its only possible to see this stuff with dissasembler/debugging work)
  • Funcom does nothing and do not care about (like now)
  • Funcom integrate an optional button via option menu with default off services (most companys do placebos here and take the data anyway)

Wow i was about to open the game and decided to check on the forums first, boy am i glad. Shady shady shady, i bought a GAME not a TRACKER! i will not touch this game until they remove ALL trackers and unecessary ad programs.
WarPigeon May 8, 2018 @ 7:30am
This is really disappointing. I was going to buy the game right before release, but I waited because I thought that they were good devs and actually deserved the extra $10. Now I'm glad I didn't buy it because news like this comes out...

If you're so worried about it you should read up on what they are for, none of this should really concern you. The companies are very open what they are, it's just about marketting attempts to see if you clicked an ad campaign they were running somewhere else and then logged into the game.

Heck you think steam isn't already tracking you anyway?

This is widely used by companies like perfect world, sega, crytek and many others.

Steam using crashdumps with explizite hardware/softwareinfos and ip which are constantly uploaded in the background, google analytics, geodata, persistant cookies, usabilitytracking and lots more like functional things... Search filters as example ;]

Half of those functions can be blocked easily. Other half not or with a bit more work. Of course there is a lot more

And no it's not just "marketing" even companys think so

Here is what redshell is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nIQ3HhAMcQg

All it does is track the first login for a newly installed game to see if it matches IP numbers logged from advertising clicks to see if marketting on facebook or youtube are paying off.

Companies like Crytek, Sega and many others use this too.

Beside that, Redshell take data like language settings, used system, screen resolution, time zone, userids and a lot more. Short said a system mirror. And nothing is their business. Not redshells, Googles or any other companys which are integrated into "games/software" not even Funcoms or from anyone else.

And if you like a pistol on your chest while using software it's your thing, Spindle. Even it's may be common. Mine isn't. Left to each one

And do you know what? Companys can ask! But they take all the time and take and take and take more without asking or integrated mechanics which do it. And because other do this too, that's just an excuse

Thank you for responding and clarifying that.
I can personally live with Redshell because Funcom and Steam already know that I bought the game and where I'm from but cross-activity tracking to other web activities via Google/Doubleclick would have worried me a lot.

On a side-note: I checked your profile and noticed you write a lot of reviews where you look into data-mining and tracking. Have you considered making a curator group for that? I'd be interested in following one to get warnings about tracking and data-mining in games.
ペンギン May 8, 2018 @ 7:52am
Hey Vellsi,
look at Penguin domination... but i write in german only.... Well urls/domains should be readable without translation and i try to write only the important part (which does not always succeed ;P)

I also collect analytics companys with examples in my group and offer a selfwritten hosts file / and template to prevent/minimize data traffic. For platforms like steam or only games. This year i checked already over 200 games. Lots of work and money :(

Of course you can take a look. Registration/member status is not required
