I'm am having a fair bit of fun. I do apologize for the wall of text.
Things to remember. The game currently is in a alpha like state. There are still large amounts of optimization, features and mechanics to be added.
On August 16th they are releasing an "expansion" which should included or will be patched to include a fair bit of optimization that will be brought over from the xbox version (also released on the 16th)
One Feature will eventually be a Purge Mechanic meaning a horde of NPC's attacking bases. That is apparently well down the line as NPC AI needs to be (and is being) worked on. Thralls will likely eventually work a little more like Fallout 4 I suspect. Though where walls and defenses actually mean something and hopefully with better AI. At that point having Thralls to defend your stuff is important.
Mounts and then Sorcery also will be added in the future as well.
The progression as I understand it (keep in mind I'm a new player I bought the game on the 22nd asked for a refund after 58 minutes and bought it again on the 24th after doing a ton of research)
You start naked and afraid.
You have to just survive for the first 2 hours. (Don't starve or die of thirst)
You start leveling. Getting weapons and clothing and building materials.
Now you can go two ways in PvE: Kill things first or build things first.
If you build things it become adult minecraft. You can level that way without too much of an issue (if speed isn't your goal) Once you get to a certain point you can start capturing thralls. Some Thralls are Named, Some connect to specific things to make things faster add new recipes etc.
You have to raid cities and dungeons to get the best thralls. Thralls are like Pokemon you want to collect them all at the moment (That is from the developers not me) Dungeons are also where you can find better blueprints to craft better items.
If you go the other route everything is the exact same except you are skipping all the early content by just killing as much as possible to get the fastest XP and unlock as much as you can before you start building. Which is really grindy.. though not more so than mining 50 stone with a stone pick axe.
Playing alone I went the first route of course because I can't solo most of the dungeon bosses. (I don't even know where the dungeons are. I really love the building mechanics)
Keep in mind it is actual Early Access. In other words you have pre-ordered a game that isn't going to come out for a year I suspect (maybe sooner, maybe longer) and you have early access to it as it develops. I don't know if Private servers get wiped but the public ones most certainly do from time to time. There are official PvE servers.. I haven't played on them most seem to be dead right now because the game had an issue with hackers and exploiters for a while and the lack of optimization leads to issues.
If you have a private server and you are PvE focused I would recommend Adjusting the Day Night Cycle a bit. I found that .5 Day time length and .5 speed (doubling the length of the day and doubling the length of time it takes to go from dawn to dusk giving you much more day time than night, without slowing down the night) does make things more enjoyable for me. I like the concept of night but you can't do a lot and the game doesn't let rest and so you can't sleep away the night.
If you want to Build more than Kill stuff with the hack and slashy combat, which will change a little but not a ton it's never going to be for honour, you may also want to adjust the XP rate a little bit otherwise it is a long grind. I'm just at level 20 with 50 hours of play time as I'm build focused. But I have a bridge across the river, 5 multifloor structures, Double thick walls, I'm right on the river I have a number of thralls and I've been making regular trips to get iron, brimstone, coal, and fight spiders. I just started a second base closer to the iron but further from a good water source which will be more of an outpost set up. I did most of that with just the stone pick axe because I didn't want to go up to get iron so regularly.
I'm learning building strategies and figuring things out. I wanted to go to bed an hour ago but played for about 6 hours without thinking, as I was building. (I'm also building honest I have not spawned a single item)
I lied I do know where one cave is.. as I found the brimstone and it is low enough level I think I could do it now with Iron Weapons and both kinds of regen I have now... but I want to be sure I have a steady supply of Iron coming first.
What there is to do is really up to you. Exiles is a Build, Explore, Expand, Destroy game. You build your base, you explore the world, you expand your base, you destroy others when they are in your way or are destroyed by others for being in their way... (be it a Purge should that happen or PvP)
In Conan one does not go out and take over a village, one goes out and slaughters it.
When you are done don't forget to collect the essances, hearts and man steaks for the altars.
Nothing says accomplishement better than the smell of a Yog BBQ.
The large village at the end of the south river used to fall pray to players building in the temple, it stopped the thralls from spawning, the server wasn't happy. That all got stopped. Things to do; find all the emotes, check out all the dungeons, visit all the ruins, kill the monsters and get their heads for your wall.
