After you've done that, go to http://clugu.com/tf2mate/ to make yourself a custom config. For macs, the best config to get the game running smooth is m0rehighfps, so select that one. for the other options, do as you please.
I play TF2 on a crappy mac with 2 GB of RAM and no grpahics card, and with this I can get a solid 60+ frames per second, making the game look smooth and awesome.
if you didnt have a graphics card, you wouldnt have a pc
Next, he acts as if he is saying he has a toaster for a pc, he could've easily said he had integrated graphics, and it would make alot more sense.
The obvious should not have to be stated.
Can you back that up with some references? It sounds plausible but I'm a bit skeptical to believe someone who couldn't put two and two together.
And I cant really explain it that well without taking up a whole 900 paragraphs, so here's a link explaining it all

Do you mind telling us more about your Mac? Is it a laptop or desktop? How much RAM do you have and what are the processor type and speed? Have you upgraded the graphics card at all?
It is, in fact, entirely worth it to get that 20+ FPS boost by lowering TF2's resolution.
It distorst the images, Stretches the image, stretches pixels, thus making parts of your monitor blurry and distorted.
You dont have to buy a better mac to run team fortress smoother.
You can easily tweak the game if you don't mind making the game look worse.
