[Install Failure] - Failed to Convert File Path
OS: Windows 10 64bit
RAM: 16 GByte
VideoCard: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
---
Note: I have steamapps/ mounted in a separate disk volume. The volume is setup such that it is mounted as the folder 'steamapps'. This allows me to have all the games stored on a SSD. This may be causing the issue?
---
Problem: Wallpaper fails to install. The installer generates a large amount of failures, displays a "File Verification Errors" window. When OK is clicked, the installer starts over again and fails. This repeats until the install is cancelled.

The first error is:
Failed to convert file path; The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect (C:\Program Files (x86)\Stream\steamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\distribution\bin, C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\streamapps\common\wallpaper_engine\distribution)

(it is repeated over and over).

Well, so much for the link. Thanks Steam!

Just to mention this, I did check the local file cache and it is fine. I just downloaded it today.

Where exactly did you set up the drive to be mounted like that?

The filesystem library I'm using (in order so that these basic things just work...) has bugs. So I imagine that's why. I will have to replicate it since they are ignoring symlink and mounting issues since years. Is there any reason you didn't use Steam's built-in feature to install the games on a different drive btw?

The drive setup was relatively simple, it's a "Mounted Volume" and is shown as such in the folder properties for the 'staemapps' folder.

Steps to create:

Kill the steam application on the Win7,8,10 machine.

[1] rename the existing steamapps folder to something else, eg. "steamapp_orig_folder". Create a new folder called steamapps and leave it empty.

[2] The volume is created in Disk Management as a "New Simple Volume", then the option "Mount in the following empty NTFS folder" (radio button) is checked (this is done instead of assigning a drive letter). Then browse to the new empty 'steamapps' folder to link it.

[3] Copy the files from the old renamed steamapps folder to the new one.

[4] Once done, unmount the volume from the folder, delete the folder and rename the old one back to the proper name (steamapps) to restore the old folder as the game cache.

Note: I did it this way long before steam had this option AFAIK I was not aware of it as an option back then. This was a few years ago... I also prefer this as the older game cache is retained.

I'm now on the beta, still fails (32 and 64 bit options). Same errror.

Thanks for the infos. Could you try this launcher: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ko96pp4bcl8gvfa/launcher.exe?dl=0 ? Just replace the existing one and then start installer.exe .

Afterwards, can you share the log.txt on www.pastebin.com ?

Right now I cannot reproduce the issue so I'm presuming the system is returning some other values on your end compared mine. I can't do it exactly like you though, i.e. I just used a USB stick.

tried the launcher (above) and it did exactly the same error.
The log (last 2 days of it) are now in pastebin-dot-com, tag: BGKigWC3
Hope that helps.

As you can see in the log, the installer tends to fail and then auto-retry again. As far as I can tell, it would do that infinitely until cancelled.

Thanks, could you try the beta another time for me?

On the beta, revalidated the files to freshen them up. The installer seemed to work no failures!
I am at the "Welcome to Wallpaper Engine" window now. Will continue with this and update.
Thanks for the help.

Yeah, seems to be working. Got a custom wallpaper running on my main monitor.
Thanks again (can close this ticket).
