The best low-level towers
I'm 50 now, wanted to share my experience with the towers you should be focusing on. This will include grey, green and blue rarity towers, which is the bulk of what you will get at these levels. Obviously for the first 5ish levels you will only have grey.

Also, link the game to Facebook and play on IOS/Android to get free silver booster packs. Helps a ton.

(green) Prime Cannon - this is basically how you deal with groups of mobs and the flying groups for a long time.
(blue) Dragon - One of your most used for a long time. Less dmg than machine gun but better range. Will become a must-use at 50 for zombies.
(blue) Machine Gun - Your work horse. This will be your main dmg for a long time.
(blue) Sniper - I didn't use it for a long time because the tower count starts too low, one you get 3+ though it comes in really handy for covering large areas.

The (green/blue) Dead Shooter towers come in really handy espcially for long maps, and the (green) Snake tower for poisening groups is nice, but none of these are core like the above 4.

(grey) Slingshot, (green) Stone Tower, (green) Detector are no good but they are specialty for certain maps so you have no choice but to use.

All of the other towers are practically useless or so niche you will hardly use them.

I agree Machine Gun (blue) is a good damage dealer and allrounder. The damage description seems to be a bit wrong. It has no area damage, but can pierce more than one target.:gunner:

The Stone Tower is my Blocker No 1. It can take a lot of damage and with runes to block flying and underground units it's the rock the enemy can't overrun. :knightshield:
Later with Engineering Tower it's less needed.

I have slightly different set.
(green) Assault tower is the best. 6 range is the largest, so I can't imagine using anything with much lower range. Even added extra 0.6 range on level 45. The main weakness of this tower is enemies with taunt, or summoner that summons taunting totems. Tried (blue) Machine gun in the same list but it still sucks compared to assault, enemies run too fast past it so it is hard to create any killzones. Still using both of them now.
(blue) Spray tower is great anti-horde tower. With range expansions that you can add after level 45 it finally covers 2 squares and deals a ton of damage
These two (three if you count machine gun that I use in some cases together with assault towers) are the core towers of my setup.

I also use (green) Stone tower when there are enemies who attack, (green) Detector when there are enemies who are invisible, (green) Digging hunter when there are enemies who go underground, (green) Cleansing tower when there are enemies that heal, (purple) Air guard for anti-air defense. Managed to get one on sale in random shop for less than 100 stars, don't regret spending them. After I got an extra count through booster it became more useful than (grey) slingshots.

Tried to use (blue) Sniper tower - it sucks compared to Assault. Lower range, but can attack both flying and walking. Tried to use (purple) Mortar tower - it costs too much. Maybe it need a different build, with damage increase rune in first slot instead of upgrade increases. Sometimes I am using (blue) Frost tower to slightly slow down enemies to stay longer in Spray tower range. Trying to use (purple) Spirit tower that was rewarded for daily but it's recharge is so slow that usually it justs ends up standing near the exit without doing much help. (purple) Detonator helped in some missions as cheap anti-stealers tower that covers the exit in missions with prime when there is not enough cash to cover it with normal towers.

It is nice to see that different players use different towers as their main set. Ohh, and forgot to mention that I am level 49 now. Soon to become 51 as I gain almost 2 levels per day if I have time. It is very fun to hold all 12 available mines now. With this set I manage to take all of them even if some just barely and it is great that double click allows to gather from all of them at once, it would be annoying to click all of them.

agreed on Assault (green) and Spray (blue), both are really useful.

Prime (green) is cheap aoe and good when well-positioned; but they can get distracted by fast guys and make you miss entire groups.

the lynchpin to the aoe towers is clearly Ice (blue). Ice + Spray is very effective for 80% of waves as long as you position so the Spray hits at least 3-4 squares. on maps where you get to maze, forcing mobs into a U-turn with a Spray+Ice means you easily get to fast forward all waves (until ghosts).

ghosts are best dealt with using a combination of Assault + Machinegun. 2-3 Assaults covering a decent route should be sufficient, but 1-2 Machineguns around a big bend can also do the same.

the usual combo is to start the lane with aoe, cover middle lanes with Assault/Sniper/Dragon, and end the lane with Machinegun. the thinking here is that aoe + single-target burst softens the mobs for machinegun to finish off. this is the ideal max-efficiency dps usage.

as for utility towers, don't forget to use Whizzers (grey) for mazing where possible. put a spire rune on them since they aren't for dps ever. Accursed (blue) towers don't seem very effective at dmg amp, since they hit one at a time and don't fire that quickly... but they might help handle thicc bosses. in general, too situational, and usually better to just plop down one more long range tower if you need more dmg.

Spray tower is your bread and butter. I've been playing for ~3 years now (from mobile) and I still use this tower in 85% of my battles - it is of course loaded with legendary runes! It is an incredible opening tower and once the range is upgraded, you can just spam waves as it and watch them disappear.

My actual problem is: How to keep the level of my important towers high?

I'm level 64 and this are my highest level towers:
64: machine gun (blue)
63: acursed (blue), fire (purple)
61: frost (blue)
60: sniper (blue), stone (green)
59: snake (green, improved white star version), cleansing (green), dragon (blue)
57: air Guard (purple)

I'm using feeder cards to get new towers up to level 45 so that they can use some runes.
My toxic tower (white star version) is 54 and getting useless against bats in mines fights, they are level 70 and higher.
The same problem is getting my underground towers.

I don't have this problem yet. I only use 3-4 towers as main ones that are required to clear a mission so I fill the rest with other towers. They level up very fast in missions, so I usually have all of them maxed by the time I get to next account level. I am at level 51 now, so maybe it gets worse later. I never used toxic towers though, they don't seem to deal enough damage so why waste time to poison enemy and wait for it to die when you can just deal instant damage with other towers. Air guard should be enough against bats. Need to add extra counts on it though.

Yeah in the fifties that wasn't a problem, but later there are so many maps where you need special towers. But after getting PvP-versions and some other towers it's hard to keep all levels high. And than suddenly you have only a few maps with underground enemies and these towers are falling back.

Seems like at most stages of the game you have your must-have set of towers, with maybe 1 or 2 extra spots; but those spots are always occupied by a must have specialty tower (Stone, Invis, etc), so you never really get a chance to take an extra/low count/underleveled tower to soak exp. Even if it dealt dmg, since it's low level it's relatively useless anyways.
alveolate Dec 26, 2018 @ 7:13am
the simple answer is do Hunts to get Blessed Hammers and fuse them.

at some point, the grey towers would probably be too weak and left unused, might as well just fuse them into your better towers for xp. just remember to detach the good runes first!

on that note... how many card slots do you guys have? i'm at lv43 and i have 40 slots... just not sure if i should buy another 5 again, they're so expensive!

Level 52: 80 slots for towers/spell/feeders/heroes and 45 slots for runes. I am a hoarder though so I try to keep 1 of each tower, even grey ones. At least I fused away the doubles that had a league version.

Towers and spells gain exp/levels from battles, up to your player level. Currently the absolute best place to grind exp is league mines, since it's the same map and waves over and over again and there is no cooldown. The difficulty increases by +1, +2 or +3 depending on how much hp you finish with (you can deliberately lose hp to stay at a certain rank longer). Doing hard mode only gives a fraction of the exp while still increasing the difficulty, so don't do it unless you want to climb ranks quickly.

One of the ship crew adds +50% experience gain. Not sure if it's just player exp or also applies to cards (either way it's the best choice). With 'beautification' at rank 80 this bonus is doubled.

I'm currently leveling my secondary / candidate towers, and here's the strat I use. If you can pull it off, bring 2-3 real towers and spells to carry the level, and fill the remaining slots with junk that needs levelling. Works especially well on league battles since they're so predictable.

PS: the concept of "The best low-level towers" is problematic, since you really want to ditch them and go for the top-tier towers asap. Unfortunately, you first need to encounter them, and then they need 100 fragments to make one tower card. Player Level is the only way to go, to increase the encounter frequency. Or you can go the casual route and just watch one daily ad for 3 months on your phone or android emulator (I use both approaches to get more copies).

My current loadout:
- sun tower - primary dps, works just as good as in the first game
- curse tower - for when the sun tower just can't keep up
- frost guard - slowing everything in the killzone by 50% to let the sun tower do its job
- mortar - expensive and slow, but handy to fill space on long hard mode battles
- fire tower - some crowd control, mostly counter against zombies and devourers
- snow cannon - my best tool against crowds of bats, also only viable tower vs freezers
- air guard - no idea what else to use vs big flyers; it's weak and doesn't do AoE unlike in PWD1
- purifier - ghosts and healers are pretty much unkillable without this
- seismic slammer, fog tower, detector - counters against specific creeps
- meteor, magma, chain lightning, silence/repair/curse/poison as needed.

Might not be the best since I had nobody to discuss it with for over 2 years.

Asked this question in russian part of the forum, developers answered that it is "player experience". So yeah, it is very useful bonus to have while you level up.

I used to rely heavily on sun tower - mine has all legendary, but recently I have stopped using it as I have started focusing on an AoE strategy. This is my current rotation:
  • Volcano - primary DPS - burn damage is immense
  • Spray League - deals with bats and groups and allows me to send next wave
  • Horrifying - keeps creeps circling my spray and magma towers
  • Frost Guard - slows everything (flying too) and I only need 1 to cover the whole map usually
  • Prime Injector - bonus damage is a must
  • Accursed - bonus damage when I have space (still working on bastion)
  • Hornet Hive - if I have space - excellent for large groups
  • Air Guard - I wish there was something better...
  • Supports - Fog, Engineer, Detector, Stun, Cleansing

I am still working on unlocking the Purifier and Bastion, and am busy leveling my Prime Arrester and Flame Canon. I am also working toward the 2 new towers as they will definitely fit into my strategy.

I have tried rotating in the Mortar, Deadly Prime Canon and Machine Gun MK2 but they don't get the job done.

Good list and agreed on MK2 - it was fun to use till around 75 level, now I have so many support towers I can't afford to take it anymore.
