The Stone Tower is my Blocker No 1. It can take a lot of damage and with runes to block flying and underground units it's the rock the enemy can't overrun.
Later with Engineering Tower it's less needed.
(green) Assault tower is the best. 6 range is the largest, so I can't imagine using anything with much lower range. Even added extra 0.6 range on level 45. The main weakness of this tower is enemies with taunt, or summoner that summons taunting totems. Tried (blue) Machine gun in the same list but it still sucks compared to assault, enemies run too fast past it so it is hard to create any killzones. Still using both of them now.
(blue) Spray tower is great anti-horde tower. With range expansions that you can add after level 45 it finally covers 2 squares and deals a ton of damage
These two (three if you count machine gun that I use in some cases together with assault towers) are the core towers of my setup.
I also use (green) Stone tower when there are enemies who attack, (green) Detector when there are enemies who are invisible, (green) Digging hunter when there are enemies who go underground, (green) Cleansing tower when there are enemies that heal, (purple) Air guard for anti-air defense. Managed to get one on sale in random shop for less than 100 stars, don't regret spending them. After I got an extra count through booster it became more useful than (grey) slingshots.
Tried to use (blue) Sniper tower - it sucks compared to Assault. Lower range, but can attack both flying and walking. Tried to use (purple) Mortar tower - it costs too much. Maybe it need a different build, with damage increase rune in first slot instead of upgrade increases. Sometimes I am using (blue) Frost tower to slightly slow down enemies to stay longer in Spray tower range. Trying to use (purple) Spirit tower that was rewarded for daily but it's recharge is so slow that usually it justs ends up standing near the exit without doing much help. (purple) Detonator helped in some missions as cheap anti-stealers tower that covers the exit in missions with prime when there is not enough cash to cover it with normal towers.
It is nice to see that different players use different towers as their main set. Ohh, and forgot to mention that I am level 49 now. Soon to become 51 as I gain almost 2 levels per day if I have time. It is very fun to hold all 12 available mines now. With this set I manage to take all of them even if some just barely and it is great that double click allows to gather from all of them at once, it would be annoying to click all of them.
Prime (green) is cheap aoe and good when well-positioned; but they can get distracted by fast guys and make you miss entire groups.
the lynchpin to the aoe towers is clearly Ice (blue). Ice + Spray is very effective for 80% of waves as long as you position so the Spray hits at least 3-4 squares. on maps where you get to maze, forcing mobs into a U-turn with a Spray+Ice means you easily get to fast forward all waves (until ghosts).
ghosts are best dealt with using a combination of Assault + Machinegun. 2-3 Assaults covering a decent route should be sufficient, but 1-2 Machineguns around a big bend can also do the same.
the usual combo is to start the lane with aoe, cover middle lanes with Assault/Sniper/Dragon, and end the lane with Machinegun. the thinking here is that aoe + single-target burst softens the mobs for machinegun to finish off. this is the ideal max-efficiency dps usage.
as for utility towers, don't forget to use Whizzers (grey) for mazing where possible. put a spire rune on them since they aren't for dps ever. Accursed (blue) towers don't seem very effective at dmg amp, since they hit one at a time and don't fire that quickly... but they might help handle thicc bosses. in general, too situational, and usually better to just plop down one more long range tower if you need more dmg.
I'm level 64 and this are my highest level towers:
64: machine gun (blue)
63: acursed (blue), fire (purple)
61: frost (blue)
60: sniper (blue), stone (green)
59: snake (green, improved white star version), cleansing (green), dragon (blue)
57: air Guard (purple)
I'm using feeder cards to get new towers up to level 45 so that they can use some runes.
My toxic tower (white star version) is 54 and getting useless against bats in mines fights, they are level 70 and higher.
The same problem is getting my underground towers.
at some point, the grey towers would probably be too weak and left unused, might as well just fuse them into your better towers for xp. just remember to detach the good runes first!
on that note... how many card slots do you guys have? i'm at lv43 and i have 40 slots... just not sure if i should buy another 5 again, they're so expensive!
One of the ship crew adds +50% experience gain. Not sure if it's just player exp or also applies to cards (either way it's the best choice). With 'beautification' at rank 80 this bonus is doubled.
I'm currently leveling my secondary / candidate towers, and here's the strat I use. If you can pull it off, bring 2-3 real towers and spells to carry the level, and fill the remaining slots with junk that needs levelling. Works especially well on league battles since they're so predictable.
My current loadout:
- sun tower - primary dps, works just as good as in the first game
- curse tower - for when the sun tower just can't keep up
- frost guard - slowing everything in the killzone by 50% to let the sun tower do its job
- mortar - expensive and slow, but handy to fill space on long hard mode battles
- fire tower - some crowd control, mostly counter against zombies and devourers
- snow cannon - my best tool against crowds of bats, also only viable tower vs freezers
- air guard - no idea what else to use vs big flyers; it's weak and doesn't do AoE unlike in PWD1
- purifier - ghosts and healers are pretty much unkillable without this
- seismic slammer, fog tower, detector - counters against specific creeps
- meteor, magma, chain lightning, silence/repair/curse/poison as needed.
Might not be the best since I had nobody to discuss it with for over 2 years.
I am still working on unlocking the Purifier and Bastion, and am busy leveling my Prime Arrester and Flame Canon. I am also working toward the 2 new towers as they will definitely fit into my strategy.
I have tried rotating in the Mortar, Deadly Prime Canon and Machine Gun MK2 but they don't get the job done.
Good list and agreed on MK2 - it was fun to use till around 75 level, now I have so many support towers I can't afford to take it anymore.
