You are likely the exception, not the rule.
Wanna know why? Because they mean the same thing, much like how circuit racing and street racing are both considered just "racing".
Well they were used for completely different reasons, "LAN play" was another way of saying "LAN multiplayer" and "hotseat" or "couch" multiplayer is another way of saying "splitscreen" or "local" multiplayer.
What happens though, with reason, is that we see a lot of people complain about the lack of online multiplayer, when it's just written "multiplayer" or "co-op" on the page, with no precision that it's sharedscreen only. (Few games support LAN without online unless they're old and the servers are shutdown).
But yeah, Fel is right, this is looking like politics / religion, so it means it's time to stop posting for me.
Actually that would mean more people would ♥♥♥♥♥ when people call multiplayer on a local machine simply "local multiplayer".
Although i find it amusing that you assume that i complain about this on every game that list local multiplayer games as what they are (either directly or by another name that falls into that category) as it seems that people like you would ♥♥♥♥♥ about the opposite. See post 3 and onwards for details.
To OP on your question about input devices, you can actually play some games with multiple keyboards and/or mice if you wish.
I'm astonished that anybody would expect a point-and-click base-building game, designed from the ground up to be playable with a keyboard and mouse, to support split-screen. Were you expecting to use two keyboards and two mice?
You make it sound impossible, there are some games that actually do support splitscreen with multiple keyboards and mice.
Actually that's not all "local" means in a computer network, aswell as the local machine (what we're talking about here with local multiplayer) there's also local host (typed localhost) which is when something is host locally on the local machine.
Try hosting a dedicated server on one computer and joining on another one with the "localhost" IP and tell me if it connects, this should proove once and for all if "local machine" and "LAN" mean the same thing.
Also splitscreen is a form of local multiplayer like hotseat multiplayer, much like how TPSs and FPSs are two kinds of shooters.
1. Steam has label local multiplayer "usually" for hotseat or splitscreen games, but there is another label for such games - splitscreen or something like that, i just use russian language. I asked just to be sure if it is planned or they foregot to add special label.
2. As said before there is mod for gamepad, so splitscreen may be possible with 2 gamepads if interface will be reworked, no need for multiple keyboards/mouses.
Still, the option to use multiple KB/Ms is there for the devs if they don't want to rework the game in any form just to get it to work with gamepads.
I know a few, Serious Sam 3, Serious Sam Fusion and Rag Doll Kung Fu. Granted not everyone has multiple keyboards and mice to use but if not you can pick up a pair fairly cheap.
Serious Sam HD doesn't but Serious Sam classic and every remix of it does, aswell as Serious Sam 3 but i dunno about 2.
