Bugged controls on Linux
Hi everyone,

Just wanted to try this game again after owning it forever. I saw the news that it has been remastered for Linux. That's great :)

I had some problems with the controls. At intervals, the bard refuses to corrospond to the controls. He just turns around and looks in the direction that I want him to go. After some investigation, I found out that this only happened when I tried to do 2 things at once, like summon the spider and pressing the direction keys and I can replicate this issue without problem.

Does this happen to anyone else? Can this be replicated on Windows or Mac OS as well?

Sadly it's been reported but seems like it will never get fixed. So have to use the older version that has its own set of bugs or slowly crawl your way through this version that has this even worse bug.
Yes. Its happed to me too. I dont know, when this bul will be fixed. Also i cant attack with a bow in most times. Please, fix it!

I'm glad it's not just me then. I've had all these problem and I can't use the bow either. It also randomly crashes fairly frequently too.

It's a shame as it seems there's a decent game in there somewhere.

Christ, it's been two and a half years already. I can believe that this was never fixed, but I honestly fathom how the "upgrade" was shipped in such an obviously broken state.

still happens
Either use Proton Experimental ( but cutscenes won't work yet ) or use Glorious Egroll Proton build. Game works fine with those. Once it fully works on Proton by default i will request this game to be whitelisted against Proton because native version is unplayable due to control issue.

After some time spend on rude language, I have figured out pretty stable way to make it run. I have not encountered any problems so far and cutscenes work perfectly too.
I use Proton-6.4-GE-1 with PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 %command% and also you need to download this : https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/87-the-bards-tale-2005-windowed-mode/
Hope it helps.

This should no longer been an issue with the latest LTS update.

I will re-download it soon and have a look.

I finally got round to testing and no sadly the bug persists.

Yes, the bug is still there. What I do when I get it is try to crawl back to the closest saving point, save, reload and cross my fingers for the level to be over before I get it again. :/

Bug is still there and absolutely ruins the game on Steam Deck.

Very easy way to reproduce it:

- Summon a creature.
- Re-open the summon menu and select the creature again to un-summon it.
- Move the left stick as you do this.

Your character will be stuck moving forward, the un-summon starts but never completes, the creature remains in the game but you cannot un-summon it or summon anything else, nor change weapons or much else, because the game still thinks you’re part-way through un-summoning and won’t let you do anything until it finishes, which never happens.

It’s sad that both the Linux and Windows versions of this game are broken and unplayable due to input issues, whether on Steam Deck or a Windows PC. A real shame.
