Well, 54.8 hours in and time to review. I can honestly say I've done everything there is to do in TBD. I have maxed every class, own a Mansion with all upgrades installed, done PvP, Raiding, and every cave/dungeon available. Let's get down to brass tacks.

Visuals

The game has good graphics. They're not amazing, but they're not bad. You wont get an eyesore playing the game. There's some textures that could use a bit of work and a few visual bugs, but overall I'd give the graphics 7 or 8 out of 10. Nothing to worry about here.

Food/Water

Like most survival games, your character needs to drink 10 gallons of water and eat a banquet fit for the entire US Olympic team daily. Nothing new here as far as survival games go. Food ranges in quality, but the only effect food quality has is how long until it spoils. Same for water. Water is very easy to acquire, but you have to boil it to make it drinkable w/o damaging yourself. Same for food. Food isnt as easy to get as water, but once you've got even a small amount of pocket change, you can buy all the food you need. Nothing to gripe about here, honestly. Pretty standard stuff as far as survival games go.

Classes

This is where TBD really shines, honestly. You start as a beggar and do what you gotta do to survive. Once you level up and unlock all the beggar skills, you unlock the Peasant class. Sadly, at the moment the only way to change class is upon death, which is a real kick in the balls if you don't own property to store your stuff at before you kill yourself. That said, as a beggar you wont have anything valuable anyway, so not really a big deal. Once you master the Peasant, the game really opens up to you. You can become a Hunter, who eventually becomes the Outlaw. You can be a Militia Man, who becomes The Knight. Or, a Merchant who becomes the Blacksmith or Monk. Getting through all these classes takes some dedication.

Overall the classes are very unique. Each one has a special role to play and special skills to distinguish themselves. Unfortunately, some of the classes are broken or pointless. The Outlaw has tons of abilities to fool other players and/or steal their stuff. Unfortunately, there aren't enough players for this to matter. The Knight is the only one who can see through the Outlaw, but there isnt anyone rolling Outlaw anyway, so kinda pointless.

The Merchant is cool, but again, with no substantial player base, the Merchant is just a pointless stepping stone on the way to a more useful class. This is TBD's curse. They have this brilliant class system that just screams for a dynamic player driven economy, yet no servers have enough active players for this to come to fruition.

Combat

The combat is probably the weakest part of the game, sadly. Whether you are holding a stick, a spear, or a two handed sword, you use the exact same animations and swing everything the same way. All weapons seem to have the same "reach" which instantly makes 2H and spears pointless, since they have no real advantage over cheaper 1H weapons other than slight dmg. Blocking/parry is possible, but failing to do it right leaves you open to a free hit, so very few people do it. Most PvP and fighting NPC's is just walking back and forth towards each other and swinging. Archery works well, but it's damage is so low you won't do anything with it before you find yourself disembowled anyway.

Atmosphere

TBD has an amazing Medieval atmosphere. It feels like a plague and crime ravaged land. They accomplish this completely, immersion wise it's great. I've yet to catch the plague, but even if you do it's easily curable with a cheap potion bought in several towns. I really wish it was uncurable after a set amount of time, which would encourage you to actually care if you get it. At this point you can take your time getting healed, since the plague really doesnt do much of anthing to you.

Bugs/Glitches

There are some, but honestly most are pertty minor or mildly inconveniant at worst. This is expected of EA, though. Which brings me to the last point. Dev Involvement. I have to give this team props. They are very active within the community. Many topics get a Dev response. The Bug Reports board is filled with Devs responding to bug reports. They just go above and beyond to show they are listening to the peole playing, and taking their ideas to heart. Massive thumbs up for these guys.

TLDR

Awesome concept, mostly functional, and just damn good fun. Game suffers from some minor bugs and a lack of players. Definitely worth, I rate it 8.5/10 for an EA game. Seriously, guys. Buy it, play it, love it. Mercia needs you!

A little better.


After 90 hours of play, I can say, without hesitation, that I would not buy this game, if I had it to do over again, knowing what I know now. The development team is about as amatuer as it gets. Poor decision, after poor decision, after poor decision. They add a decent sized update and then, the next time they do an update, they basically remove every mechanic that was added, in the previous update. There is less in the game now, than there was 5 updates ago. There really isn't much to do and that's a fact. You will spend 95% of your time just building your house up and your character up, which includes nothing but running vast distances, to gather materials. The other 5% you will spend fighting the same old bandits and wolves. The videos are quite misleading and totally misrepresent the game. The videos actually make it look like it's a decent game, but the reality is quite different. The reality is, once you are done maxing out your skill tree and your house, there is no reason to continue playing. If the development team was worth a damn, it could be a decent game, but it will never reach that point, because of very poor decision making and lack of ability.

One review here say's that this game is on par with Skyrim, that is an outright lie. It's not even close. NO WHERE near as good as Skyrim and the fact that someone would even say that is a joke. The few people that play the game are misrepresenting the game, to try to get people to buy it, so they have people to play with. God's honest truth. The servers are next to empty. Most of the time, you'll be on a server by yourself. Max, you'll have 10 players, for a short time, on a server in a city as big as New York. Another review states that this is probably the most realistic medieval survival game on the marketplace, yet that same person was just posting, on the forums, about how unrealistic it is.

There are numerous problems, with the game and the development team. For starters, the devs will add some bugged out feature, to the game and instead of trying to fix it, they just remove it. That has happened with numerous mechanics. I don't think they even have the skill needed to fix the issues. 1 example is, houses are very dark, so people wanted light sources, for inside the house, so they added lightsources, only they didn't light anything up. Instead of actually trying to fix the issue and make the light work, they just removed it. This has happened with multiple things. Also, everytime they do an update, it breaks more things than it fixes. I guess that's why there is next to nothing to do, in the game, because they add something, it doesn't work right and get's removed. Almost nothing in the videos, is actually in the game. In my opinion, they are literally false advertisements and completely misrepresent what they are selling.

There is NO quest based system. Only a very short tutorial, which one of the devs said you could just play over and over again, for quests. LOL, BORING. Honestly, that is the truth. If you want quests, which people have asked for and were responded to with "play the tutorial again". What a joke. That's how bad the dev team is and worse.

There are basically 4-5 different looking bandits, scattered across the world and they are actually few and far between. All of the peasants virtually look the same. There is no PVP going on, unless it's some spawn camper, waiting to whack newbs, while they aren't paying attention and take what little gold they start with. Then when the newb respawns, they'll be waiting, right behind the respawn, to whack them in the back again, before they have time to react. Wouldn't matter if they did have time though, as you start with nothing, except a little gold. They will also constantly rob the supplies that you need to upgrade your house, from inside your house, until you can get a door up. If you catch them and manage to kill them, they cry and cry about it and play stupid games, like trying to act like they didn't do anything, say they were in their own house, etc. Some very childish people playing the game. You can't team up with anyone that you meet, in the game, because you can't trust anyone in the game, not to stab you in the back the first chance they get.

Another problem is, you'll spend 20-30 hours, or more, building up your house, another 20-30, or more, building up your character, only to lose everything with their regular server wipes, forcing you to start all over again. I guess they do that to try to make it seem like there is actually something to do. The majority of the time you play, you will be collecting wood, or ore of some sort. It's basically a walking and material collecting simulator, with small amounts of combat, in between. The fighting mechanic is as basic as it gets, so the combat gets old rather quickly. You will fight wolves that have been moving in slow motion and have been this way since they were added, long ago. They have never even tried to address the issue. The game is literally a train wreck, with less additions than subtractions.

There are "loot" chests scattered about and I literally found 1 chest, out of 90 hours play time, that even had anything in it. What was in it was a sad joke. An apple, a rope and a book with no text in it. Literally and seriosuly. It's that sad.

Look at the Steam charts. There are around 25 people playing a day, across ALL servers. Don't be fooled by the positive reviews. As a consumer, I tend to overlook a lot of negative reviews, because of inaccuracies, but with reviews for this game, it's the exact opposite. You have people that just want others to buy the game, so it doesn't get abandoned as soon as it would otherwise. 25 people playing. It will be abandoned. Especially with them wasting so much of their budget by constantly removing what they spent weeks working on, to add to the game.

Save your money. Buy a game that actually isn't boring as hell to play and one that has an actual development team, instead of a bunch of rank amatuers. Believe me, if the game was as good as these people try to make it sound, you would have far more people playing, than 25 a day.

Oh, I should also mention the "class" system, or lack there of. Every class is lumped together, as basically one class. There is no selecting one class or another. Skill points come so frequently, that you will max out one "class" skill tree and then the next and the next and so on, so there is no difference, at all, from one player to the next.

Another thing that is off putting is the way "moderators" handle the forums. They have a blatant bias towards players that have been there longer, who will act like little children, starting argument, after argument and if you respond back, they won't say ♥♥♥♥ to the person that is actually creating the problems, instead, they will try to put it all on you. Rank ass amatuers. Just stay away from this mess. Also, notice how many of the positive reviews say "this has potential to be a good game". Potential, BUT it's not and from what I have seen from this "dev team", term used very loosely, it never will be. There are far better medieval games out there.

This should give you an idea of how bad it is. Notice how EVERY TIME they get a bump in players, they lose them just as quickly as they got them. Max players was 600, now it's 18, with 56 peak, across about 20-30 servers.

I wish there was a "maybe" option for this game, because I am unsure whether to reccommend it or not. It's certainly an acquired taste, and reading the other reviews I can say that the majority of them are correct. The good ones and the bad ones.

This game is so rough around the edges it's painful. At the same time, it's also a thing of beauty with an immense amount of potential. I'm not sure who it was who woke up one morning and said to themselves "Oh hey, the black death! What a laugh that was, I'm gonna make a game based on it", but whoever it was, they need a pat on the back.........and maybe some psychiatric support :D

This game is bug ridden. I mean, it's got more bugs than a tramp's vest. They're everywhere. And YES before anyone says it, it's an early access game and you have to expect bugs. Sure, but what I don't expect is for bugs to still be in the game almost 2 YEARS after I first played it, considering the amount of updates since then. There have been numerous overhauls and improvements, but I am still finding some of the bugs that initially put me off playing. None are game breaking mind, they just detract from the fun and immersion.

Immersion is what this game is all about. The world in which it is set is truly unique. It's dark, it's macabre, it's gruesome, and it almost whiffs of the corruption. It's a great take on the tired old medieval genre. As some people have said, there isn't much to do in this world though. It's all about the crafting to level and thats about it. This is mostly due to the lack of a player base. This game is a life sim / survival game. Life is generally quite dull, we are all just trying to survive for as long as possible. That's the premise of this game. With boils and warts added on top.
You're thrown into the world as a lowly begger with a bald head and a nasty rash, no money, and no clue. You then proceed to survive. Simple as that. Unlocking certain skill trees allows you to change your class for others with different benefits and abilities. The peasant is a farmer type, the mason is a builder. The hunter hunts and the doctor............well......stay away from the doctor. You build yourself a little home. A shack, a house, even a castle. You plant some crops, raise some animals. Or become a bandit and rob the stinking peasants. You do whatever it takes to live one more day. It's that simple.

Graphically the game is ok. It's rendering of the dark disturbing world seems to work quite well. There are numerous anomalies in the graphics in the form of visual bugs though. Some become unnoticable whilst others become unbearable.

Sound is atmospheric and fitting to the scene. Can't really say much more than that.

Combat! Ugh, combat. It's bad. It's really really bad. Not quite as bad as Corsair: Man of War, but it's a close second. The animations are painfully slow and there's like 2 of them. Personally I don't care, I'm not playing for combat, but if you want fast paced brutul pew pew, this is not the game for you. On that note too, combat is mostly pve, as there are no players. You will be killing bandits and fanatical priests, wildlife too. There are a ton of bandits. It seems the plague brings out the worst in people. They're everywhere, just stood around doing nothing until they spy you. You can run or fight, but if you run to town, do not expect the npc guards to help. They all seem to be either uncaring or visually impaired.

In closing, when I first got this game, I actually expected it to be vapourware. It was so bad, nobody played, the devs didn't seem interested in it. Now I have come back to find that it is still going and has been considerably improved from it's original form. I still quibble about those bugs that are there, but the devs are active and attentive and bringing out updates. It just needs more players to take the plunge. This is a niche game, I like it. It's different and I find it relaxing and frustrating in equal measure. If it continues to improve at it's current rate to a point where it is releasable, I'll consider it a good purchase.

So, to start off I do not review games as normally I do not see the need to. However in recent light and other such factors I have deemed it to finally break myself of non-reviewer to make this one specifically for a few reasons. One being the lack of decent reviews for this game, not to mention many near troll ones. Secondly I believe there is a lack of a sincere review that shows both the positive and the negative of this game. With that out of the way, let us begin.

First, the basics. Its the normal survival, nothing new here; You need to drink and eat to stay alive with the added problem of te plague. If a NPC in town is throwing up or hacking his lungs out, best stay away. If you catch the plague, your food and water plummet, and if either reaches 0, you lose HP rapidly until you perish or you outlive whatever disease you contracted. At first, I liked this. There is no instant healing, but slow regen from your "wellness" or how much food/water you have, and the disease adds more depth...however you will not find yourself catching it often unless you wonder into a rat or a NPC thats sick, which are both easily avoidable. There is now an attributes system that you can put your points into, and if you die you lose them all. Yes, ALL of them. But in the end, its not that bad as all your profession skills stay the same. Once you max out all your professions, trust me, you will be happy to die sometimes and to spend all your points doing something again. All in all, I find it good and a pro of the game.

Second, quests. There are none. This is either a pro or a con for you. There is some tutorial quests, and thats it. Past those starting few, there is nothing but whatever you want to do.

Thirdly, combat. It...needs work. Its not the best, barely passes for good, but all in all it could be worse. Some weapon abilities dont work the way they should, but all in all its not bad. I certainly have played worse and I can not condemn the game for it. In the end, its again your call. If you are a huge combat lover, you can learn to like it, or hate it.

Fourth, housing. Yes, there is player house and this is were most of the game shines...mostly. So, once you learn abit about the game, you can go to a Earl and purchase three things. A Land Contract, to build a house in predetermined spots on the map (which are MANY). Peasant Contracts, which allow you to hire guards to protect your home or hunters to sell you meat and skins, or more things of that nature. The last thing and what few aspire to do is getting the Kingdom Contract, which allows you to take over one of the two (I believe) forts/kingdoms in the game world. I have not delved to much into this, but in the end it is something nice I think. Factions/Guilds can take over the Fort and it can be fought over. The housing system I like, its not bad at all, and in a few days time from writing this review there will be a brand new update with the housing system making it much better in general. So take what I say here with some salt. All in all, a plus for me.

Next (Cause numbers), Crafting. Crafting, is good actually. Most make sense, and you have MANY trees to learn and level to make new things. For example you level peasantry to get better tools, such as better pickaxes to mine ore. Smithing, to learn to smelt that ore and to make them into weapons and armor. Cooking, to learn to cook better meals, and even Doctor to learn to heal yourself and others. There is much to it and its good, but yes, it could be flushed out better for my personal tastes.

Lastly, Devs/Bugs/Game itself. Let me get this straight right out the gate. I have played not super long, but I have seen plenty of stuff happen in my "little" time playing. For one, the devs personally I see are wonderful. They test things, see how the community likes them, and changes it as needed. You can even talk to them freely on discord and all in all very wonderful as far as I have seen. They truely seem to care not just about the game, but the community as well. The bugs in the game I can cover with two words - Early Access. Bugs are everywhere, you will have plenty of them, and I hate them too. It happens often, not all the time, but often. But I do not mind relogging every so often, not a big deal. They have a bug report for a reason, use it and it will be fixed soon, be patient.

Final thoughts: The game itself is lacking, it needs more content no doubt, but what content it does have is not on the surface. My meaning behind this is something I can not overly speak without spoiling some major game updates that personally when I learned about blew my mind. But while the game has some barebones, and some very in depth wonderfulness, the game holds many hidden gems that must be found and searched for. From the player written books being added in, and the small little things the Devs do to help out, I will happily overlook a few problems for the game that certainly is going to go far. Personally I have purchased this game many times, for myself and friends, and I will continue recommending this game. Solo, it would certainly wear thin quickly, but get a few group of friends, build a base in the middle of a snowy mountain, and go break into a catacomb somewhere. Who knows, you might find something special. (Thats a hint btw, knock yourself out). If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, let me know...or don't, your choice.

Normally I pass up games with review scores like this has. I am so, so glad that I ignored them this time and tried it out for myself.

Game gets a bad rap. Yes, it's very early access which means it is lacking content right now. But boy, what they do have is well done. The world is quite large and has great detail. It looks fantastic and is the best medieval world I have experienced in a LONG time. Combat is a bit wonky right now but looks like the foundations of a pretty good system.

Honestly I probably won't play this game a ton because of the aforementioned lack of content. But I will happily let these developers have my money if it means this game will continue to be worked on. It's the most promising early access game I have played in a long time and I am VERY excited to see where it goes.

Not sure why there is so much hate on this game, so figured some one who played for longer than a hour should say something so here i am.I know how early access games are like, i support many my self so i am very good at waiting which is what most of the real players of this game are doing right now.I would suggest that you do not buy this game if all you care about is playing a game, this is not a finished product and will have bugs and may not even work properly on every ones computers.I have had a nice experience so far, i play as a peasant so i have tried out the farming aspect of the game during my 8 hours of gameplay.

Had to search for food as you start starving pretty fast, got some seeds from the berry bushes and had to find farm land to plant it at.Found cotton and planted that as well, growth rates are pretty quick so did not take long for me to harvest my stuff.As i played and interacted with berry bushes and cotton plants i noticed it gave me experience points and so i ended up leveling up my farming skills and found my first issue, the weight limit skill did not work witch is not game breaking issue.So i ignored it and continued my farming, sold food etc to merchants for gold i had no idea what to spend on until after exploring for a couple hours i found a town at a river with dead npc bodies all over the place and i noticed that i could buy a small house there.So i bought it using all my money on that only to find out the reason why no one else had bought it, you can not get furniture at the momment so all empty houses like the one i bought are useless.Still not a big issue so i moved on and leveled up most of my skills before getting bored of the lack of things to do.

I had a fun experience doing farming and exploring and even cought the plague, tried out combat and got owned pretty badly until i stole a sword from a guard, the guards then put me down like a dog pretty quickly.My friend then picked up my corpse and cashed in on my bounty and he also grabbed the sword i stole without any problems with the guards.
My friend gave me the sword and i went bandit hunting, stopped pretty early as i got nothing from killing them and continued farming until i decided to wait for some updates before playing again.

As a peasant you can plant seeds,gather resources like iron ore and wood and harvest crops, you get experience from doing so which will in time level you up and give you skill points.I think you also get experience from just staying alive over time but its been a while since i was online so not 100% sure.
When you die you lose your character but not his skills and any unused skill points will be gone when dying.

My friend was a blacksmith so he crafted stuff, like better tools to help me do my farming, we learned that armor did nothing yet and found little to do other then selling our goods to the town merchant.

Do i recommend people to support this game? Yes i do, this game could become great in two or three years.
Any one experiencing bugs or crashes should report their problems so that the developers can fix them.

Okay this is gonna be hard. Pay attention.
So I got a coupon to get this game 75% off and I was like hey why not. So $5 is what I paid. For that small price this game is fun. Kind of empty as far as the multiplayer aspect goes, but I like the game mechanics so far. Anyway so here is my list.
Pros:
-Graphics are pretty good considering.
-Atmosphere is dope.
-Everyone starts at the same stage of life which is pretty cool.
-Progression is easy to figure out, but requires a little planning so you don't die

Cons:
-Still early access since 2016? Weird.
-Definitely still has it's fair share of glitches, this one I am gonna get into a little bit. I started as a female beggar, but after only about 15 minutes in game I clicked modify to see what it did. This led me to discover that the more skill points you put in the more options for roles in society that open up. Unfortunately this also caused my character to have a male body while keeping her female head. This cannot be fixed by my own actions, and to make matters worse the "report bug" button on the main menu is a joke since when I clicked on it, it informed me that the developers probably hadn't set it up yet. After almost 4 years that is kind of messed up.
-I did not see in the controls or anywhere on screen where a quest tracker could be if there even is one. This is detrimental to game play, but I will note that there is a tutorial quest line going in the top right that you can toggle the details on and off of with P.
-Days go by super fast. This is beneficial, because of the whole wages system yet still makes the hunger and thirst things really stand out.
-Equipping items either sometimes shows on the character or shows, but hair sticks through.
*Spoiler*
-The starting area has a couple of notes and such written that all have your name and seem to be addressed to you, but no clear idea of what we are supposed to do with that information. One even states that the guards are the ones who knocked you out and killed all your "friends" and maybe they killed your "mom and dad", but I couldn't help but feel like that was kind of just thrown in.
-The "achieve" system is still in test mode and has no clear direction on how to activate it to help test it or however thats supposed to work.
-Pretty much anything labeled with "test" is broken as far as steam mechanics for this game.

To top it all off I like the game play its fun, engaging, and really gives you a feel for how desperate times were back then for hunger and thirst. Plus the starting area is well set up to kind of begin your understanding of how to play the game. Now if the developers could fix the plague of glitches and non-functional links. Then players would be more focused on surviving the black plague. Also maybe add some mini tutorials for items like the fishing rod (still don't know how to use it, just kind of been whacking the docks every time I try.) Anyway I ended up teaming up with someone so I am changing this to thumbs up since it still has a lot of playability as long as you dont mind the occasional crash and losing small stuff.

Only buy if you are willing to support the sporadic development of the game. You will not be paying fair price for the current content available in this Early Access Game.
Most reviewers will not show you where the Design went wrong, but I will articulate that here. The game started as a Survival Game, to try and survive the hunger, thirst, disease, and violence of the medieval period around the time of the Black Plague/Death, and there was intention to make this MMO so that players would rely upon one another's skills to keep each other healthier and free of disease, whereas playing solo would likely lead to a more rapid death due to the aforementioned factors.
Here's where Design failed, is to make assumptions that a large player base would be steady, and it has not, so even when there are a few players on a server, they are not likely to group with you and offer the necessary help you need to succeed.
Here's where Design also took a left turn. Perhaps the Project Manager of this game became too influenced by other events in the Game Industry, such as the success of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and/or Warband, but this game shifted toward a "peasant to King" type of progression that shifted it from Survival Game to yet another climb-the-social-ladder game, and given the prior mentioned design and reliance aspects, it simply doesn't work. Bad Design, made further worse with successive patches that only opened up more bad design choices toward this quest for royalty.
The Game Dev's have been off and on, mostly off, it seems, and they admitted in most recent news (July 2020) that 20% of game buyers are asking for refunds, which is hurting their ability to develop the game. That's why I circle back to my upfront statement, that you're being generous if you buy this game, especially at Full Price, and you should only enter this game if you're feeling like giving a donation, more than buying a game.

First review ever!
This game needs some positive response. But instead of telling you how promising this game is. How dedicated the devs are and the innovative take on the open world pvp crafting mmorpwtf is this game again... I will just tell new players what to expect.

1. you will die. Get over it, there's a surreal beauty to the semi\permadeath this game offers.

2. Permadeath? Yes! Hours of character development will go bye bye in an instant. But alas there's hope, like a Phoenix rising from the ashes you will start anew. With a few perks from your prior characters.

3. This game forces players to interact. Whether dancing around each other to establish friend or foe. Or trading for essential supplies. Grouping to survive a bandit hoard. You need them as much as they need you.

4. Just learning to survive in a medieval plague is a challenge. Sickness is everywhere, and will consume you eventually. Thus leading back to my second point.

5. class is everything. Play to your strength. Or utilize new strategies after failing miserably.

6. spend some time learning the game. cities are safer, guards are your friends, loot is everywhere and will keep you alive if only momentarily.

7. Staying alive is the only way to progress, how to survive is totally up to you. Callback to my fifth point.
