QTE = Quick Time Event = small scripted game sequence where you have to "interact" with the key-presses as prompted :)
( you have to quick tap the interaction key = E )
If you want to make these QTE's a bit easier, you can change the interaction mode in the game menu: Options > Accessibility > QTE control (then choose which ever mode suits you best) ...
"Tap" = you have to tap the interaction key many times repeatedly to take action / "win" the quick time event.
"Press" = press the interaction key once to take action / "win".
"Automatic" = no interaction needed (iirc), the quick time event plays as a cutscene and action to "win" is automatic.

So no, Hold is no way auto, but perhaps it allows be slow, but you need hold fast and long enough.
