[Spoilers] About Dr. Gilbert Alexander
Alright, so you are given a choice on whether to let him live or to let him die. That is the moral dilemma placed before you, and so what did you guys choose to do? Personally, I chose to kill him. All through his audio logs he asks to be euthanized after alls said and done. The insane version of him constantly sends alpha series jerkoffs to kill you anyway, and he's annoying as all get out all throughout blocking your way to the Power of the People Machine.

Once the level is mostly complete you have the option to kill him or leave him. He begins to beg for his life on the way out which gave me pause for a second. I thought, okay this might be the wrong thing to do, but then what sealed the deal was when he madly shouts he'll go outside instead if I let him live! Its like, what kind of life does he have if he lives, right? When Lamb drops this section of rapture or whatever into the Sea wouldn't he die anyway? Unless he can swim? Now if he was truly serious about going outside, this meat blob abnomination that he is, wouldn't he be considered a sea monster? A mutated thing full of ADAM, set out upon the world? Could he reach the surface? Who knows what he would be capable of?

Thats when I electrocuted him.

Quick edit to add: It feels morally grey to me, because the right thing to do would be to kill him, it'd be merciful since he is mad, but does this count against you if you kill him?

Killing Alexander could be seen as a mercy killing given his condition, but I don't think 2K had the time to code the "in-between" choices.
Don't worry, you can get the best ending even if you kill him, as long as you do not kill anyone else including the little sisters.
I guess they considered him to be okay to kill then? If his death has no effect on the ending (if you don't kill anyone else), that means he was a monster that deserved to die afterall?

No, that is not what I meant. It is just that the devs felt that this was a moral dilemma to which there was no right answer. Therefore they decided to give the best ending to people regardless of if they killed him, as long as they did not kill anyone else.
That can't be correct. I save the little sisters and the old woman but kill gil and the newspaper guy and get the good ending.

There are 6 endings in total ranging from best to worst. I don't remember the exact requirements for them. You can find them on the internet.
If you let him live like everyone else you have the option to kill, you'll get the achievement "savior".

On a moral standpoint alone, it is right to kill him in my opinion. It was basicly his last wish when he was still sane and fully capable of thinking and decisionmaking.

I just killed him and no one else, so I got the best ending.

If you kill Gil Alexender AND the Newspaper guy, Sofia Lamb dies at the end but the rest of the ending is still good.
I was surprised Eleanor let her live after all the suffering that had come from Sophia. It didn't seem logical in anyway considering you have killed for less throughout the whole game.
Nope. I kill those two mass murderers but let the old lady live and Lamb also lives. I would prefer to have Lamb die too but that is not how it works out.

best ending- spare all the choices (or at least 1) and rescue all the little sisters. this is the one you actually get an achievement for.

i always rationalized sparing Gil as a sort of.... the "real" Gil "died" a long time ago, so why kill this giant slug who no longer poses a threat to me? it's definitely the one of grayest morality in the game.

good ending- rescue all little sisters, but kill ALL three choices. i actually like this one the best since i like the idea of a rogue, independent chaotic good Eleanor LOL

choice ending- harvest at least one little sister. there are two outcomes in this ending, but four possibilities depending on if you spare or kill the 3 choices. also, Eleanor's reaction in the "bad" ending is slightly different. but neutral is the most gut wrenching ending ever and i both love it and am emotionally destroyed by it

bad ending- spare the choices but harvest all the little sisters

worst ending- kill the choices (or at least 1) and harvest all the little sisters
