Hello,

you can pause the game any time you want and queue up to 3 commands for each of your party member, plus you have several optional auto-pauses that give a nearly turn based feeling to the game, but still with the advantage of the real time rules.

Thank you for pointing this out! However my problem with realtime is not only the combat comands.... i hate the evade movement on tiles. And i allready saw that you have to evade some attacks in combat by moving tiles and evade traps and so on..... nothing worse for me than a tile based action gameplay.
But i i love games like this and therefore asking if there are titles who are not in realtime like might and magic was.

:-o
If you really hate any avoiding movement in real time, I'm not sure what you'll feel about the game ; there's surely not too much required movement, but there's sometimes.

However, you can always pause, press the movement key, and resume, so maybe it'll be bearable for you. You can even turn by holding the right mouse button when the game is paused.

Another possibility it's to lower the difficulty level during the few fights that require moving.

Well, you have 2 hours to figure it out and, if you don't like it, you can get a refund through Steam. As far as having to move to evade goes, there are only a few bosses that require this and maybe a couple types of elites if you are on the harder difficulties.

As far as turn-based action, you can set up a series of auto-pauses in the options tied to events (i.e. mob dies, empty skill queue, character dies, etc.) that give you plenty of time to think about your actions.

As far as other tile-based games go, you may look into Elminage Gothic (but I warn you this game is beyond difficult). If you have the will to attempt the near-impossible, Elminage Gothic is a great game.

I hate the realtime aspect of grimrock myself, but this is cool with me so far (only played like an hour so far but I feel confident in my liking this game already). But I have a suggestion that others wont do =P.

It's a dungeon crawler, it has great customization, both in terms of playable 'classes', and how you 'spec' each class (you don't pick abilities, just which stats to boost), and the challenge is great... hard enough that noobs complain it forces you to grind, but... you don't really until floor 20 and 30, which are the final floors for the base game and expansion, and at floor 20, it's not much of a grind cuz the enemies on that floor literally give you 5-10X more exp than floor 19.

a couple downsides though, it's a top-down dungeon crawler, so if you like the first person immersion thing, there's that... also, it's a Touhou fangame, so if you're utterly phobic about Japanese anime-style girls, there's that. It's not a sex game or anything at all though, it's really quite fantastic for it's gameplay (there's a 2 as well, which is also good, but I prefer 1 for balance/challenge reasons). It's not 'officially' in english, but the translation patch is 100% complete and stable. If none of my stipulations are a kill for you, feel free to pm me questions about how/where to buy it (IIRC melonbooks has it) and where to find the patch.

That said, as mentioned, you can pause in this game, making this feel about as 'realtime' as baldurs gate or icewind dale.

I am a bit confused here. Did you forget to mention the title of the game you are recommending? Or am I just missing something? I can't seem to find it anywhere in the post.

I didn't forget... aliens from outer space came down and deleted it just to zing me! honest! *hangs head in shame*.

It's called labyrinth of touhou. If you try it, get the 'special disc'. it includes the original game and the expansion, 'plus disc' is the expansion. and yeah, the art is kinda...not good forgot to mention that too. I know I say so many bad things and not good things but that's just to convey I'm aware where it may turn people off, and if none of those things matter TOO much, and the few things I say are great DO matter, you hopefully can trust my opinions on them since I'm super effing critical =)

@mayrc,
so do you enjoy the game ? Can it be labeled as "will please turn-based fans" or not..? :)
Ghaleon 23 Jul, 2016 @ 3:09am
For what it's worth I'm liking it more and more the more I play. I just wish you got talent points faster. I'm playing that new soldier difficulty because why not. Seems to be pretty good. I'm at floor 3 and the floor 2 boss was really balanced. Basically my healer ran out of mana just before the boss died despite using mana efficient heals and spending 2 talent points in that meditation. But I didn't use a mana pot. Also, my tank was holding aggro for most of the fight, and I kicked his shadow move every time I could... and ran ahead like a bat outta hell if kick was on cooldown to avoid backstab (or at least try to, I think I did though) pretty sure I fought that boss 'correct'. Regular trash was pretty easy except the evil eyes before I got the hang of them, but hard enough that fighting a pack of skellies with some archers behind that 4 pack was a bad idea (I knew this but just wanted to see how bad... bad enough I used 2 health pots =P)

Smal review:

Well the autopause options are lacking but since you can slow the combatspeed realy drasticaly if needed its enjoyable even for turnbased fans.
Graphics are surprisingly nice, dificulty options are plenty and seem balanced.
All together its a realy nice game that can be recomended and i am happy i gave it a chance.

However what prevents the game from beeing a masterpiece are the character classes. While 12 classes are more than enough and the skill trees are nice and make some impact....... the classes itself lack differences.
example:
Ranger vs Assasin:
Both have same mechanic (in fact all rogues have same mechanic) both are same role and the assasin just puts out abit more damage while ranger has..... well ranged attack wich doenst make THAT much of an advantage.

I realy wish the clases had at least 1 unique featuer each like ranger has a 50% chance to detect hidden switches in the wall or something like that.
Right now the option to cross skill classes feels abit like an excuse for making the classes more unique.

@Ghaleon,
yup, trash mobs shouldn't give much problem if you play carefully, but if you aggro more than 1 group or forget about aggro management, things can get ugly fast enough... ;-)

@mayrc,
a) what additional auto-pauses you'd like to see..?

b) yup, the Ranger & Assassin are close enough, but they have a couple of important differences : with the Assassin, you'll want to go full Haste, keeping Killer Spree on as most as possible, and enhance your auto-attacks (coz of Touch of the Snake) ; the Ranger has an unique Dead Possum ability (can lose aggro instantly), coupled with a Taunt and a very high damage avoidance (on CD), he can be a very efficient off-tank from times to times.

c) the Ranger has an unique ability : the smoke, that can help in some of the mazes... :) (but yup, it's not super useful >_< )

I just named ranger and assasin as the lack of difference it is very obvious there. But many clases dont differ much during gameplay. Whats missing a unique touch to the classes. Just 1 thing per class needed that makes them unique. And i am not talking about combat abilitys. Just some uttility aspect.... for example Paladin could come with good basic anti magic resistance while soldire could have +50% effect from potions. Stuff like that.

As for autopause the one thing i am realy missing is a paus when a charakter is rdy to use a ability when global coldown is done. So the you can choose a new ability to activate.
