Toaster Computer needs help running ES
Hi there,

I got Ubuntu 12.04 on a Chromebook, and now I'm trying to play Endless Sky on it.

I've downloaded Steam, and it runs properly. The game successfully downloaded and installed. But then I hit "Unable to create OpenGL context! Check if your system supports OpenGL 3.0, etc".

Other posts and a lot of Googling yields that I should update my graphics drivers. However, this is a Chromebook, so I don't think I have a graphics card; however, my computer must have integrated graphics or something, because I can run LWJGL 3 applications (which, from my understanding, is just a Java port of OpenGL 3).

Running lspci yields "VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation ValleyView Gen7", but I don't know what to do given this information.

Please help! I need something fun to do during school.

I'm not sure we should be encorageing this sort of thing, but here goes.
The infomation on your OpenGL vertion should be in the Intel HD Graphics menu. The update options should not be far off.
Alturnitively you could try downloading new drivers directly from here https://downloadcenter.intel.com/

just to clarify this: LWJGL3 is a project that unifies OpenGl, OpenAL and several other bindings under java. As far as i know, it can also work with OpenGl 2, so being able to run LWJGL3 is not a guarantee that you have OpenGl 3.

you can try the following commands to find your OpenGl version:
$ glxinfo | grep "OpenGL version"
you may need to install the package mesa-utils first.
(because his internet is ♥♥♥♥)

Running "glxinfo | grep OpenGL version" yields "OpenGL version string: 1.4 (3.0 Mesa 10.1.3)" so I guess I have OpenGL 1.4 :(

I will look into new drivers soon.

EDIT: How do I figure out which drivers to download? Intel Driver & Support Assistant, which I could supposedly use to figure out what drivers I need, downloads as a .exe, and using "Search Downloads" on Intel's Drivers & Software website using the search "Intel Corporation ValleyView Gen7" results in nothing (neither does the search "ValleyView")

I could probely do more if I had the computer in my hands. It might be worth asking intel support.
Have you tried running that exe?
TheDujin Nov 11, 2017 @ 4:03pm
I can't run the .exe since there's nothing that runs Windows executables on Ubuntu computers, excluding WINE which my Chromebook is too weak to run (as far as I know).

I'll try asking Intel support when I have the time.

when he says exe he means program file for your OS, not just the windows executable format.

Not trying to be a ♥♥♥♥ but a Chromebook has trouble running anything.

There is no Ubuntu executable; the website[www.intel.com] only offers a Windows executable (it even says that with its FAQ "What OS does the utility run on?")

I just did "sudo apt-get install fglrx-updates" and managed to change the error upon running ES (yay?).

Now it says "Unable to query the GLSL version. OpenGL version is 1.4 (3.0 Mesa 10.1.3)."

Agreed :). But surprisingly it can run Minecraft at 20+ FPS but not ES?

What model of Chromebook is it? I suspect the GPU doesn't actually support OpenGL 3 but knowing the model would make it easy to find the GPU and so whether or not it is possible to run ES at all.

That's my suspicion too.

It's an HP Chromebook 11 G4.

This site[www.cnet.com] says that Graphics Processor is Intel HD Graphics, which means that my Chromebook has the same graphics as the Windows computer that I am typing this response on has (how sad!). My Windows computer has Intel HD Graphics 5500, however, so it is possible that my Chromebook has an older version of Intel HD Graphics that doesn't support OpenGL.

So that is a Celeron N2840 with Z3700 grahpics I beleave.
OK, so looking at it, it would appere that intel doesn't support your opperating system on that chip.

Your Windows computer should be able to run ES just fine since that GPU supports up to OpenGL 4.4 but it seems there's no hope for your chromebook.

Oh feels bad man :(

Welp, will just have to play more ES at home, then.
