Denuvo and Possible Performance Impact on Loading Times
NOTE: This is a theory so please don't put me on your hit list just yet.

Problem
Everytime we launch Dishonored 2 the Denuvo loading screen, (the very first loading screen you get after launching the game), is loading so slow I timed it to one to two minutes at worst. The game have been doing this since we got it and no improvement yet. Sometimes but not often enough it can load a bit faster which appears to depend on what type of connection you have which in my book class it a performance problem bottlenecking for alot of consumers.

Denuvo in Offline Mode
I apologize for the bad quality as I used my phone to capture since I don't have any screen recording software working on this particular loading screen.

I made two small tests running Dishonored 2 in offline mode disconnecting from my internet altogether, and one in online mode while running the Task Manager in the background, ( http://i.imgsafe.org/09a5344717.jpg ). Not a surprise to me but in all tests the Denuvo loading screen only took seven to eight seconds to load in offline mode. If you hook it up to the internet you can get around one or two minutes waiting at this screen if unlucky with noticeable high network traffic.

For me this evidence is clear that Denuvo is indeed causing trouble in the fashion of long loading times. In the following videos I made tests to run Dishonored 2 in offline mode and in all tests in offline mode it completely skipped whatever it was doing when connected in online mode.

Why Denuvo?
Denuvo constantly encrypts and decrypts itself using their servers in a fashion that is unique to each machine using the program. According to Denuvo Software Solutions the program don't read or write data to your computer, (something good at least), but constantly send and gather information entirely based on the Denuvo servers.

In a nutshell theoretically you can notice performance issues like long loading screens which is why people are upset with the system in general. Game developers use Denuvo because of the security against piracy to increase sales even if it comes with bottlenecks for some consumers. Albeit we have both good and bad cases of Denuvo, but the fact could be that Arkane integrated Denuvo poorly into Dishonored 2.

What do you think?

50/50 % everytime i start the game it takes 2-3 minutes or 5 seconds !

normally it zips through fast, sometimes it takes ~1-2 min. Have no idea what does it do and where does that difference come from. The first loading took the longest from what I remember.

Check your firewall settings. Ensure the game is trusted and ports are allowed.

Upon launching the game, a few outbound requests are made. Sometimes this can take longer than others. However, if blocked I personally believe the anti-tamper checks go into overdrive and delay the game even more. Or it could be due to certain busy times for those servers in the day?

My firewall is pretty strict and shows all this activity. First time it blocked it and the menu/game lagged like crazy. Set it to trusted and allowed, had zero issues since. The launch time is normally very quick, but still sometime varies.

How do you know it's denuvo that's the problem? Maybe it's the texture caching?

How could you...you, heretic!! Everyone knows that Denuvo is the one and only reason for games to load slowly. Period.

sometimes it's 5 seconds, sometimes it's almost a minute for me. in game quick loading and stuff is super fast though.

I'm usually playing within a minute of clicking "'Play Game", maybe that's unusual, but apparently I'm also one of those freaks getting a stable 100+ fps since launch with no performance hiccups whatsoever.

EDIT: In the spirit of being helpful, I do in fact have my entire firewall disabled, so that could be why I haven't experienced this.

you are a tech guru. please more tips so I can volt my gameboy color as well as you.

Really random. Sometimes the loading screen just blinks into existence and goes away and the godamn videos loads.
Other times the loading screen takes minutes to get done.

Same for me although I would say it´s more like 80/20

It probably runs denuvo once every x number of hours. So if you start the game up a lot, you will only notice it once in a while. If you start it up once a day, you'll probably notice the long load every time.

Firewall tweaking does nothing. It already set itself a firewall exception upon install.

Anyone else waiting forever for the game to load up?
there is no denuvo loading screen, it loads in the background silently.

Same. Sometimes it loads instantly because I have it on an SSD. Sometimes it takes a full minute, even with the SSD.

The game needs more fixing, that's for sure.

yep completely random just like the hitching in the game.

Maybe, maybe not. What else would the game load that seems so random just as you launch the game?

Other then it's based on idTech5, and all previous idTech5 games all load when you first start them as well.
RAGE, Wolf, Evil Within. Even DOOM on idTech6 loads before it takes you to the menu.

It's part of the engine.
It's got zero to do with Denuvo.
