Do not buy this "game" unless you have an extra $100 to spend.
One of the big cons that nobody mentions is that Garry's Mod will not work with stuff in the Steam Workshop unless you bought a lot of other games on Steam or, preferably, the entire collection of Valve games for $100.

No, really. You have to purchase the following games along with Garry's Mod:

Half-Life Source
Half-Life 2
Half-Life 2: Episode 1
Half-Life 2: Episode 2
Counter-Strike Source
Day Of Defeat: Source

Those are the primary ones you need to get the majority of the Workshop stuff working. Optionally, you need to get the rest of the games in Valve's collection in order to get a random doodad to work properly because a sound effect or model is missing.

The reason why I'm practically FORCED to purchase Valve's games, even though I personally hate a couple of them? When Garry's Mod was put onto Steam, one of the stipulations was that only a CERTAIN number of models, sound effects, etc, could be in GM at the time. The rest of the Source enabled content is locked away onto the other games.

You could attempt to bypass this with some lua scripting and getting the elements elsewhere, or be a good samaritan and upload them to the Steam Workshop so people won't have to buy so much crap. But the Garry's Mod community isn't known for anything other than being a place full of screaming pubescent children who sound like an autistic child of 4-chan and their own "Vidya games" board. The users here on Steam will mock you and flag your content for "Copyright Infringement" and "warez" by design because Valve didn't release all the proper content neccessary for GM to work.

It's all because these same ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ children who make the mods, maps, and tools won't let you play because the community loves to reuse content from other games instead of having to make up their own content with a "Free to other GM users" license. If you attempt to play with something regardless, you'll get floating error icons, bad collisions, missing models, and no sounds.

Lets face it, nobody actually plays Garry's Mod with the very small vanilla content it comes it. There's very little in the way of actual stuff inside GM itself and the only way to make it not a boring chore is by going onto the Workshop or being forced to play on the multiplayer servers, which are usually buggy as hell, severly unoptimized, and full of screaming children who will pester the ♥♥♥♥ out of you.

This is the secret scam of Valve and their hold on Garry's Mod.

Edit: Use this.

It's all the content needed to make Garry's Mod run correctly. YOU'RE WELCOME!

Edit 2: So many people have ♥♥♥♥♥ed and complained that you only need Half Life and Counter Strike.

Here's the thing that many of you dumbasses keep on forgetting about this, YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PURCHASE GAMES YOU DON'T WANT TO MAKE TO MAKE GARRY'S MOD WORK!

"Oh, all you need is half life", "just get CSS", "it's cheap, stop complaining". You people don't understand you're being screwed over in a bad business\design decision. Workshop items and multiplayer servers use too much content that isn't part of the Garry's Mod base, and doesn't easily come with them. You end up with purple and black textuers because you didn't purchase the correct game from Valve, because the community uses too much ♥♥♥♥ from those games. You're being used to buy ♥♥♥♥ you don't want just to get a single game to work.

This is like having a chunk of the game being taken out and being resold to its audience, leaving out a group that didn't purchase that chunk have ERROR's popping up. Imagine if you tried to play Team Fortress 2 and certain maps\weapons are filled with ERROR models and textures becaues you didn't buy a DLC pack. THAT is the main problem.

This wouldn't be bad at all, if all of the content from CSS and the entire Half Life series, plus some of the extra content from the newer games, were included in the release of Garr's Mod. But because of this bad decision, you're being screwed out of the total experience.

Please rage for me more. Your grappling at logic is very amusing.

$100? Your math is way off, my friend. With the current sale, the prices are:

Base game - $5
Half Life Complete Pack - $20
Counter-Strike: Source - $5
Day of Defeat: Source - $5
Portal - $5

Total: $40

That's cheaper than most modern day games out there. A lot of Garry's Mod servers are full of immature and abusive admins, I'll admit, but once you find the right community, you'll be having a blast.

There's also the Valve Complete Pack, which packs in every Valve made title ever made, including Ricochet for $100, and that's when there is no Steam Summer Sale going on. All those are half off for at least 2 weeks.

Still, think about it. It's very ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up for anyone to have to purchase all those extra games just to make one work.

Oh my God, it is called GARRY'S MOD! Damnit, you don't even need many games. Just CS:S and TF2.
/dev/null Jul 11, 2013 @ 5:42pm
Sure it should have a warning in the game description, but allot of people already have these games and if not they should have them.

You need only TF2 to play. You can deal with the missing textures yourself if you're too cheap.
Just buy the orange box and CSS+Garrysmod bundle, stop complaining.

And here we are, the community at work with browbeating others into purchasing content no one should have to buy.

You people know this is the only game or mod in existence that does this kind of move, right? Any other mod would only require one base game to work, not 6+ like you people are trying to enforce.

Also, I personally hate CS:S and it's community. I didn't want to have that awful thing installed on my computer, but I'm forced to have it as well because you people seem to really love the guns and maps, while being masochistic Deathmatch lovers.

I'm trying not to look like someone fooled into a conspiracy theory here, but...

Sir, I honestly think you are just a bit paranoid. I know you're mad, but please, if you keep this up then you might just end up as one of those kids you keep complaining about.
Joraco Jul 11, 2013 @ 6:20pm
I don't have half life or portal on my computer all I needed was CSS and TF2. Since I bought CSS with a pack with Gmod included and TF2 is free the grand total ended up being only 23 dolars I think.

It's not a conspiracy. GM was designed to be like this with a lot of help from Valve.

Gentleman, what you are saying is not true. Bought HL2, HL2 Epi 1 + 2, Lost coast for 6.50 the other day. DoD isn't that expensive or necessary in gMod unless you want the full suite. DoD is a great game anyways. But do you think you should be allowed to play that game without buying it? That is absurd. CS:S is pretty necessary to really enjoy Gmod, but GO is like 6.50 right now and the original CS:S is probably cheaper.

So let's do the real math here, not the made up fairytale strawman math:

All the HL2 stuff you needed: 6.50 the other day
Gmod: was 2.50 the other day
DoD:S: Like 5 bucks
CS:S: Like 5 bucks

Barely 15 dollars bro, not 100 dollars. Perhaps you need to stop drinking Absinthe and started eating Pistachios.

There are other ways of implementing the textures into your game. It's not like it's impossible and it's dire that you have the games. Also, it's a mod, not generally a game. The other games that you "need" to buy are just for gun and texture fixes. Most game types in Garry's Mod have these guns and/or textures. The textures and guns are supposed to come from other games for a reason. Not just to run you out of your money. Besides, the only ones you really need are CS:S, TF2 (which is FREE) and HL2. A estimated total of about $30.
Minichurro5 Jul 11, 2013 @ 6:51pm
There also tons of sales on Valve titles all the freaking time.
Melody Chaser Jul 11, 2013 @ 7:23pm
if ur realy cheap i found some sources on google for free but there realy buggy
Chimmy Changa Jul 11, 2013 @ 7:27pm
I don't think you people are quite grasping the picture here.

Firstly, I don't want to play Day of Defeat when I want to play Garry's Mod. The only thing the player should need is the essentials and props that comes from it. You're implying that I want to play DoD for free instead of paying for it. That is a huge load of bull. This is about being forced to pay for something I don't want in order to get another to work.

Secondly, you're talking about a very limited time where everything is sold at a loss. You can't just say, "Oh sales happen all the time, just get them when they're cheap." Yes yes, I get that. Except they're very sporadic at what gets sold at what time. Outside of those limited and random times, the prices jump back to their "retail" prices.

Half-Life Complete: $40
Counter-Strike: Source: $20
Portal 1: $10
Left 4 Dead 2: $20
Day Of Defeat: Source: $10

You can keep on saying "It's on sale", "It's on sale", "It's on sale" as much as you like, but this is still messed up.
