Avast throws it in the virus chest
claiming that the .exe has something called a "Win32:Evo-gen [Susp] in it

That's referencing a file named "garry_mod.exe". That example is likely of a virus disguised with gmod's name and not the actual exe file used to start the game. That is also 8 months old, not to mention gmod's executable is hl2.exe.
This screams false positive. Turned off Avast and uploaded the file to virus total. I don't think the update is malicious since it's only Avast users complaining about this.
