DirectX 9 Error

When I open Portal it starts in DirectX 8. I don't understand why. But on top of that, when I type "mat_dxlevel 90" or above 90 it shows up with the pink and black checkers screen. Please help!

Try "-dxlevel 90" in the launch options to force it to default to Directx 9, then take it out on the next load or else your settings won't ever save.
