Anyone else having to redownload portal?

HI all,
A couple of weeks ago all of the sudden Portal says it has to be reinstalled, yet I see the files are still there. I don't want to download the whole thing again. I clicked install but sure enough it is asking to download 2+ gigs all over again. :/

I just bit the bullet and downloaded again. But I would like to know why. We can backup games to other storage, but if that won't work when we restore...what is the point?

There's an ACF file that tells Steam if a game is installed or not, located here: Steam\SteamApps. If this file is corrupted or deleted, Steam will try to redownload the game completly even if the files are still there.

Did you manually move the files? Or you backed it up with the Steam back up feature?

Nope didn't back up or move any files. It is a bit of a mystery why it decided I no longer hat it installed.

Oh and thanks for the link. I will try that next time! I figured there had to be a way, but didn't find one.
