I think they have balanced movement speed with chamber dimensions quite well.

nah, the designers intentionally did not put much detail into the environment to focus on making portals work well.

We quickly realized that unnecessary objects scattered all over the place distracted players to the point where it actually interfered with the portal training process. Don't step or go in front of them. Simple. :) Use your portal to eliminate it or put you behind it.I think thats why you are slow a little, to force the player to use the portals to avoid or kill turrets.
