Linux version unofficially available
Good news for all Linux users - the Linux version is as of now unofficially available. Because AMD is not supported in this version (you can try, but it's likely that the game will crash or there will at least be a lot of graphical issues) and we'd like to collect user feedback first, we've decided to not feature the Linux version on the steam page, yet.

All backers and everyone else who already bought the game will be able to install it using the steam client on Linux, though.

EDIT: Anyone having problems launching the game via Steam, try manually starting the executable outside of Steam.

Have fun and please let us know if there are any problems.

Have you rtied looking at what's eating your RAM while ES is running?

Not directly, but since nothing else was running (beside steam itself and syslog) my assumption is it is ES..

Don't assume. Check.

Run top and see what's eating up the ram. If you need to sort easier, you can use htop.

OK, sinec there is no feedback from DEV or anyone else and my game crashes all the time after like 5 minutes with RAM being overrun and SWAP failing (never seen anything like this before)

If you're still running 14.04, then you may be running an outdated nvidia driver as well. That might be a problem for these new UE4 games.

what is the difference/recommendation for LINUX users to use as start option:

Play EVERSPACE
Play EVERSPACE with shipped libraries?

I have to choose when I hit PLAY in my library.
And I am experiencing severe performance and stability issues with the game, unfortunately.

I am running on Ubuntu 14.04, kernel 4.4.0-104, GTX970 (with the propriatery driver from nviidia), Intel i5-5200 and 8 GB RAM - that should do it, right?

I wil ask for a refund on the game and hope they will launch it officially for Linux soon - aftzer all it looks lreally like something I want to play (and pay for).

uh, you posted in a Steam forum, waited a little over 24 hours and no one responded with an immediate answer for your problem, despite the enormous lack of information about your system... and you're upset about it? Really?

14.04 is no longer the standard for teh Steam Runtime, it's definitely long in the tooth at this point, I'd recommend getting yourself to 16.04 as a general rule (this is what I'm running).

Your hardware is fine for ES.

Which Nvidia driver are you using - the one from the 14.04 repo must be quite old at this point...?
oh, my mistake, I run Ubuntu 16.04, of course and yesy, I am using the one from the official ubuntu repo for the NVIDIDA driver.
And no, I did not just wait here to someone miraculasly answer my question, I also tried to investigate on my own but could not find any solution.
At a certain point I stopped my investigation efforts and requested (and got) a refund - I will buy the game again, when it officially support Linux.
I use Linux as I used to use windows before: I enjoy the OS, I use it for my everyday tasks but I am neither deep enough involved in the OS nor ionterested inb getting into it to hardcore digg into every single issue.

I would like to report that the game appears to run fine on SteamOS with the default launch option (i5 6400/GTX 970). Video playback appears fine as well. Choosing to launch with shipped libraries does *not* launch and immediately closes.
Martinuschka 5 Thg01, 2018 @ 2:35am
For me it only starts with the shipped libraries and nothing happens with the other option (Ubuntu 17.10).

Hi folks,

I would like to share a short update on the current status of the development with you.
We are heading towards the next patch for Linux which will include an engine update to Unreal 4.17 and a fix for mouse input on Linux. Besides this there are some game play related fixes like fixes for the collisions for station turrets, the ancient warden teleportation, an issue with operating the gunship turret after cutscene playback, some problems with the menu navigation and some more.
Currently we are still struggling with a technical issue that breaks the loading of the engine plug-ins but is effective only in the shipping configuration of the game. This makes the debugging a bit more cumbersome than usual but also should be hopefully the last barrier for the patch to arrive.

Thank you for the continued support and communication.

Looking forward to finally seeing the SteamOS icon on the store page eventually :)

Super glad to hear. Thanks so much for the info. Hope getting through that last hurdle doesn't cause too many headaches.

Looking forward to getting rid of my dodgey mousewarp script :D

Thank you for continuing to work on this. I eagerly await your results.

Awesome, can't wait to see if joystick support is improved with the incoming patch, too, because while gamepads are okay, big joysticks are more fun! ;3

Either way, nice work devs!
