When I initially purchased the game they didn't even have that orange warning box.
Thats right there wasn't a notice of it requiring subscription at all. Beyond that the wording of the 'free' 30 days access time was different and it implied you could use the steam key on existing accounts.
SE was very sloppy in this game's Steam debut. According to comments by the devs on reddit I don't think they finalized the page description when it launched, which lead to much of the confusion to early buyers like myself.
Actually, there are other methods. If cash is why you're having trouble, not only are FFXIV time cards becoming more readily available, but you can also use UltimateGameCards to buy Crysta and pay for your time that way, or you can get a pre-paid visa card.
Purchasing microtransaction currency is different in games that have that kind of backbone compared to that of a traditional MMORPG that does not offer a cash shop.
As far as XIV, it is an MMO and the nice Orange box said it requires a fee.
Oh, I know- but as I said, Steam Wallet is my only viable option- The reason is, I happen to have a large stockpile of legitimate prepaid Steam cards saved up from Game Stop trade-ins and gifts. Thank you though :)
Regardless, the point remains that Steam should have put up a message about this :)
What region? NA had it the moment I bought my copy which was maybe 14+ hours ago.
As far as requiring outside methods for payment, you're expecting an exception (and what is essentially a beta) to be the norm. EvE Online is the only standard Pay-to-Play MMO that supports recurring subscriptions through Steam Wallet. That's one title.
Don't post acusations without former investigation. These titles gives bad reputation to the game for something that isn't true.
