Dungeon Siege

Dungeon Siege

How I got the raw Steam version running
1. Download Dungeon Siege in Steam. This is from scratch, completely new folder with no other files within it. The chosen directory is "Wherever you put your Steam game install files\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Dungeon Siege 1"

2. Once downloaded, it will not run. Upon attempting to try to, it gave me an error: "Fatal Error" in the title border with

"A fatal error has occurred and the app must shut down.

Unable to enumerate any DirectDraw devices installed on this system."
Along with a wall of text I will not add here.

Going into the game's install directory and running "DungeonSiege.exe" manually myself, produced the same result.

3. Attempting to run the "DSVideoConfig.exe" file produced a small window (which is how the game originally allowed you to set your video card settings before running it) but with the "Video Driver" and "Resolution" drop down boxes devoid of anything to choose from. "Shadows" and "Filtering" had options to choose from but being unable to choose my "Video Driver" in the first box, they are completely useless.

4. Downloaded "dgVoodoo2_54.zip" and extracted only "dgVoodooCpl.exe", "D3D8.dll", "D3Dlmm.dll" and "DDraw.dll" (the dll files are in the "MS" subdirectory) and placed all 4 files in the Dungeon Siege folder where the game's executable is - all 4 in the same place. (if you want this, Google it - it is easy to find)

5. Doing the above is not enough though. Opened dgVoodooCpl.exe, clicked on the Add button on the top right of the little window and browsed to "Wherever you put your Steam game install files\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common" and clicked on but didnt enter, "Dungeon Siege 1" and hit the "Select Folder" button.

6. Went to the "DirectX" tab in the little window, dropped down the "VRAM" box and chose the highest, "1024 MB". Dropped down the "Antialiasing (MSAA)" and chose the highest, "8x". Unchecked "dgVoodoo Watermark" check box. Clicked "Apply" then "OK". This created a new file (configuration file I am guessing?) "dgVoodoo.conf" in the same directory.

7. Ran "DSVideoConfig.exe" again and this time, there are options in the "Video Driver" drop down box to choose from. Going all out, I chose the option that I thought I should choose - since my graphics card is a nVidia GeForce GTX 970, I chose "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 - Hardware TnL", then chose the highest resolution in the "Resolution" drop down box, "1024x768x32", "Complex Shadows" in the "Shadows" drop down box and "Trilinear Filtering" in the "Filtering" drop down box. Hit "OK" and crossed my fingers.

8. Ran "Dungeon Siege.exe" and everything was flawlessly running perfectly. I even played for a bit, saved a screenshot and exited. Just to test everything, I ran it again, from within Steam itself (hitting the Play button) and it still ran perfectly fine.

I didnt go to any website to generate a gas file or other such rubbish.

To PROVE this, I DELETED my Dungeon Siege game settings folder in My Documents, completely uninstalled Dungeon Siege and removed it's directory and started 100% from scratch.

I have read about how ''Steam Overlay in game" has been a talking point in how it causes problems with Dungeon Siege. I still have that enabled. :/

I did not read your wall of text but from what i gathered from the title you can't make the game work on steam. Here is my message from another thread and It does work to run in throgh steam.

"I made the steam version work on a laptop with the expansion. It just needed me to install the steam game , install my old game from the cds and copy that over the steam game and copy the folders Killah had for free that now are for sale ( whats up with that ?). Everything works nice and clean, but its a rip off to buy this game and not work for 7 ♥♥♥♥ing euros."

P.S. If you don't own cds for the game like i did with the expansions just "google until you find the games" if you get what i'm saying. It's required, for me at least it didn't work only with the steam version and Killah's fix ( guide was free now you have to pay for the folders )

Thanks for the guide @mouseno4, even if I found out about dgVoodoo on another game forum shortly before you posted.

In order to play Legends of Aranna, you can either play the game from the original CDs (or copy the files over to the Steam version) or use Killah's fix (which is free, that's his bonus pack which is not free).

I'd also like to add that using dgVoodoo also allows you to use ReShade with Dungeon Siege since it's a DX11 wrapper (ReShade doesn't support DX7).

If i couldnt get in trouble for sharing it, i would upload my copy of Killah's fix somewhere.

I politely ask you no to do so, steam asked me to remove it, and so i did, let's respect that, shall we?
Clearly you didnt read what i said. I cant upload it. Even if i wanted to, i cant.

So there is nothing to respect, is there?

Oh and by the way i'm not charging anyone for nothing, the fix is simply gone, you can't get it anywhere.
Then why is your Bonus pack or whatever available on your steam group and it has a price tag?

I know you don't like reading, but perhaps you should
How about you go ♥♥♥♥ a goat. I hope steam closes down your trash group where you get money from people for a game that steam is selling.

I wish people would stop arguing in my thread.

Why would Steam do something so ret@rded as remove a fix for a game that doesn't even work?

Cuz $
It does work. This thread is my proof that it does.

To be fair Steam has no access to the source code of this game. In reality you should be blaming Gas Powered Games for not continuing native support, even though it is still being distributed. :steambored:

Well no, because they SOLD the rights.
Genesis 26 Aug, 2017 @ 6:12am
Not only do they not own the rights anymore (Square Enix does), but GPG got absorbed by Wargaming in 2013, so it no longer exists.
