Fix for crashing after changing options
Hi mates,

so I installed the game and played a little. After a restart with changed options I always get a crash to desktop. I assume that many have the same issue. Here is the solution.

Cause of the crash
Setting the shadows to highest level will crash the game after restart. Medium level still works fine for me. You can set all other settings to highest value.

How to restore original game settings
  1. Disable SteamCloud synchronisation for Darksiders 2
  2. Delete the "options.dopt" in "<your steam folder>\userdata\<some number>\388410\remote"
  3. Delete the "options.dopt" in "C:\Users\<your windows user name>\AppData\Local\Darksiders2"

Now the game should start again and you can continue playing and change the gfx setting EXCEPT the shadows. Max setting for shadows at the moment: medium.

For those who are still having problems after trying to follow the instructions that Krusi85 provided, there is one more thing that may work.

Launch your original copy of Darksiders 2, lower the Shadow settings. Save the game and quit.
Now launch the Definitive Edition. You may actually be able to play it this time. This worked for me.

Note that you don't have to lower the Shadow settings to minimum, just lower it by one and you'll be fine.

I also noticed that unlike the original Darksiders 2, vsync actually works. Can stutter a bit, but not like the original. For nVidia users, I recommend you use 16x anisotropic filtering and FXAA or MSAA. The in-game anti-aliasing is like the original...which is not very good.

The only problem I had using this method was that it eliminated the highest difficulty from the difficulty slider.

My specs:
Phenom 2 x4 955
8GB RAM
Geforce GTX 960 2GB
Windows 10 x64

As for the 6$ discussion: Just support the devs. It was a technical issue with the franchise pack vs. buying all seperately as they stated in their announcement! So get over it. We all want Darksiders 3 don't we?

This worked for me! I couldn't even start a new game with a new save.

But after doing this, it's working perfectly. Thanks!

For me the userdata folder is located in "c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\"

Have you deactivated SteamCloud snyc? If it is still on, steam will just copy the file there again.

yes thank you! it works here also at 1080p just dont touch the shadows i got everything else maxed out works great 60fps on a core2duo 2.4ghz 8gb ddr2 and a gtx 650

there is another way...

install the original D2 and change the shadows in that one to MEDIUM, then exit and start the Deathfinitive edition and it SHOULD work.
It seems they BOTH share a settings file and the Deathfinitive edition doesn't like the shadows set to maximum.

Followed everything up until Step 3

I don't seem to have a AppData folder? Tried running the game without doing step 3, still getting the CTD

This should be sticked until the developer send out a patch to fix this. Thanks!

I think windows usually hides this folder. Find folder options and check "show hidden system files" or something like that.

Worked! Can max everything, except the shadow slider DONT TOUCH IT :P

Didn't work unfortunately, it resets everything as mentioned but still crashes whenever I try to start a new game. Problem is, there's no options menu before you start a new game so I can't see if Shadows are still being set to Highest by the game despite me deleting the Options file.

I seriously canNOT believe that something as obvious as this wasn't picked up before release.

Thanks for that, kind of ashamed I didn't think of that myself heh :p

Just to clarify, OP said atm we can't go above 'mid' settings for shadow quality, is that the default? as the game uses a bar for shadow quality and not a 'low, med, high' setting

And what does everyone else think of this new version so far? Just loaded it up but tbh I'm not seeing much of a difference so far

"Great" QA. So, the marketing was about the new shadow/light settings? Well done ... :]
