Random crashings of DOOM!
I picked this up in the glorious sales and I'm loving it at the minute. My only problem is sporadic crashing that seems to be getting more and more frequent.

Details: Basically the game randomly locks up on loading screens, I can't see any pattern to it. Every so often while loading a new area (be it in game or even when loading from the title screen) or cut scene the loading screen animations and the game itself will freeze. At this point Alt+F4 and Ctrl+Shift+Esc don't do anything, the only way I can get to the Task Manager is Ctrl+Alt+Del to force quit.

So far I haven't lost any progress, as it seems to sucessfully autosave when I leave an area before crashing, so I just reload and carry on (if it gets beyond the loading screen), but its really jarring having to restart every few minutes and it seriously marrs what is otherwise an excellent game.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have the same issue. I can't even log into my game right now without it crashing.

I can start it up fine, it seems to be a problem when it's trying to load an area (either levels or the exploration areas) that the freeze ups happen. It seems to load FMVs fine as well

I was having the same issue with crashing at loading screens, but I just tried verifying the game cache and that seems to have solved it. At least I just played a couple hours with no issue.

Right Click the game in Steam -> Properties -> Local Files -> Verify the Integrity of Game Cache

People also report that it might be a compatibility issue with newer versions of windows. Running the game in xp works for them.

It didn't completely fix the problem for me, but it did make my game a lot more stable.

I tried that, and I kept getting the same message - "One file is missing and will be reaquired." Then nothing. If I verify again it says the same thing.
From what I've seen online this is apparently pretty common, and not just with Psychonauts. If it TOLD me what the missing file was I could at least go online and hunt it down there...

It shows that it is missing a file for me each time also, but the first time I did it, Steam automatically reaquired 500kb of data (or maybe 5mb). It was in my downloads section.

Sorry if that doesn't help. Not sure what else to do other than what was suggested above about running in compatibility mode.

I assume you're all on WIn7; just set the executable to Windows 95 compatibility mode, as explained in the support FAQ thread. This solved it for me.

Just thought I'd come back and confirm that this sorted the problem out and I've finished it, excellent game.
